“I’ve been thinking it’s about time to sell the Corvair and start looking for another project,” Gordon says over morning coffee.

“I figured it was getting that time again.” I tingle with the anticipation of presenting him with the Nova. Happily, I take another sip from my cup.

“In fact”—he kind of hesitates here—“I’ve got my eye on a 1969 Mustang over in Rosetown.”

A lead weight drops in my stomach.

“What, do you want me to wait awhile?”

“Hmm?” I feign innocence.

“You look kind of upset.”

“Oh, that.” I make a face. “Too much sweetener in my coffee.” I put my mug on the stand beside me.

He nods. “So, you’re okay with that?”

“With what?” I fluff a pillow on the sofa and look back at him.

“With me maybe buying the Mustang?” The sparkle in his blue eyes melts me down to my toes just the way it did when we were in high school.

“Do you think you should wait until you sell the Corvair?” I tear my gaze away from those perfect eyes and fidget with the cover on the arm of the sofa, acting only partially interested in the conversation. He must not get suspicious over my concern.

“Yeah, I guess you’re right.” There’s a hint of disappointment in his voice. My heart constricts.

“I’m sure you’ll have no problem selling the Corvair. You’ve got it running great, and it looks really nice since you’ve painted it.”

He brightens. “Yeah, I should be able to get it sold fairly soon.” He pulls out his pocket PC and pokes at it with his stylus. “I think I’ll just make myself a note to get the word out to a few dealers that I’m selling it.” After he scribbles something, he looks up and smiles. “Honey, you should see that Mustang. She’s red and a real beaut.”

There he goes again with that car gender thing. “If she’s a beaut, what will you do to fix her up?”

“She doesn’t need much. A few rust spots to go over, slow-moving parts, that kind of thing. I’ll put her body back in order, give her ticker a check, then a scrub and a polish should do the trick. She’ll be good as new.” He winks.

“Could you do the same for me?”

“Huh?”

“Never mind. I’m thinking if you don’t have much to do to fix her up, the car will probably cost more, right?”

“Well, you see, that’s the thing. It does cost more. That’s why I hadn’t mentioned it to you yet. We can see what I get for the Corvair and go from there.”

My mind scrambles to think of what I can do to hold Gordon off from buying that Mustang until I can give him the Nova. With our anniversary not that far off, I’m not sure what to do.

“Well, I’d better get to work, or I won’t be able to afford that Mustang,” he says with another wink.

We both stand and head for the kitchen. Gordon grabs his laptop, then bends over to kiss me. It’s short and quick. “Oh, let me try that again.
