Cognitive Metaphor Theory

George Lakoff and Mark Johnson are often credited with initiating this line of thought with the publication of Metaphors We Live By in 1980. They argued that metaphorical thought is one of the most basic and powerful mental procedures. Metaphors are not merely linguistic flourish but structure our most basic understandings of the world.2

The Oxford Concise Dictionary defines metaphor as a figure of speech in which a descriptive term or phrase is figuratively applied to another object or concept.3 Aspects of the meaning or connotations from the source (often referred to as the vehicle) are applied to the target (the tenor) in a fairly straightforward manner.
