Todd stared at the bottles he had picked up from the county health center that morning. There were three, with fancy-schmancy names Todd wouldn’t have been able to pronounce had he not called Dr. Shapiro in Chicago a few days ago. He liked to believe he had phoned at Essie’s prompting, but he didn’t tell the physician that.

He touched each white-capped bottle at the top. “Indinavir. Zidovudine. Lamivudine.” The doctor had told him this “cocktail” had been doing amazing things over the past year. Todd informed the doctor he was never one to turn down a cocktail. The dour-faced man actually snorted out a sound that might pass for laughter.

Dr. Shapiro also told Todd he was glad he had called, because he was worried about him. He had tried to reach Todd at his old phone number, but it had been disconnected.

Todd didn’t bother to clue the doctor in on his despair and desire to burn bridges at a point when he believed his young life was over. Instead he said, “Yeah. Sorry about that. My mom, back in Ohio, passed away, and I needed to move back here to take care of things.” Todd thought how it sounded as though his mother left behind an estate, when the truth was it was only a few dollars, a house, and a ghost. “But I did want to get in touch because you had said something about promising treatments. I want to know more....”

The doctor had sighed. “Yes. That’s exactly why I was trying to call you.”

The upshot of their conversation was what resulted in Todd’s getting the three prescriptions filled. He had been surprised the country health center was able, after cutting through some red tape and a small mountain of paperwork, to fill the prescriptions for him for free. Todd had been stunned to learn that, if he had paid for them himself, the cost for only a month would have run into more than a thousand dollars.

So he was grateful.

And hopeful.

He had only one other bridge to cross.
