Chapter Twelve

Friday evening rolled around and Dillon was all set to meet yet another of Leah’s dates. Her name was Cora, and Leah was all excited about getting back in the saddle again.

“I can’t believe how many offers I’ve had since I updated my profile,” she said. “I’m going to be busy for months to come. No pun intended.”

Dillon forced a laugh. Leah was trying to be cute, but she knew she was nervous. She always was before a date. But that didn’t mean Dillon had to laugh about Leah making women come. She hated the thought. One day she’d get the nerve to tell Leah that. She was sure. But for now, she kept her mouth shut.

Leah sat between her and Stephanie at the bar waiting for Cora to arrive.

“You don’t have to wait,” Leah said to Stephanie.

“Oh, I don’t mind. I like to have a drink after work every so often.”

“Okay, but don’t feel obligated.”

“I don’t.”

Dillon listened to the exchange and wondered what she heard in Leah’s voice. Was it jealousy? Why on earth would she be jealous? She couldn’t possibly know they’d slept together, and even if she did, what business was that of hers? Hell, she slept with someone new damned near every night.

“Let me see your phone again,” Stephanie said.

Leah pulled up Cora’s profile picture and showed it to them.

“I think she’s here and headed your way,” Stephanie said.

A tall woman with slicked back black hair approached the bar. She wore torn blue jeans and a leather jacket over a white T-shirt. Dillon fought the urge to stand taller than the woman and start a pissing contest. She didn’t like this woman, who she knew both Stephanie and Leah would drool over.

“Hey there,” the woman said. “I’m Cora.”

“I’m Leah.”

“Nice to meet you.” She smiled, and her dark eyes glistened as her gaze roamed up and down Leah’s body.

Dillon felt her skin crawl. She made a fist at her side. She really wanted to knock this Cora woman for a loop.

“Nice to meet you, too,” Leah said. “And this is my best friend, Dillon, and one of our bartenders, Stephanie.”

“Wow. I didn’t know I was meeting the whole family.”

“Just a couple of us.” Dillon tried to hold her voice steady. She really didn’t like Cora. But she didn’t seem dangerous, so she couldn’t really tell Leah not to go out with her.

“Well, you ready to get out of here?” Cora said. “I’ve got big plans for you tonight.”

Dillon closed her eyes and tried to block out the conversation.

“Okay. I’ll see you guys later,” Leah said.

“See you,” Stephanie said.

Dillon opened her eyes.

“Have fun.” She made herself say.

When they were gone, Stephanie took the bar stool next to Dillon.

“Why do I get the feeling you don’t like meeting Leah’s dates?”

“What makes you say that?”

“Because you act like you hate it. And you’re not your normal smooth self with them.”

“They’re not for me to impress. That’s Leah’s job. I just meet them to decide if they strike me as psycho killers.
