Chapter

Nineteen

Queen Frida Acciai of Narva

Once the meeting mercifully ended, Frida felt weary herself, but instead of retiring to her room, she sought out Caterina Cortese out in the village. The two of them locked arms together and walked along the land. Narva’s north was almost entirely frozen, covered in glaciers. There were deep fjords in the south, sea inlets between steep cliffs. Towering mountains were also in the south, but right here, in Furfell, there was relatively flat land. At night, from the citadel, Frida had been able to see northern lights, and if they walked for a few more hours, the northern lights would shine down upon them.

Neither of them said a word, but eventually, Frida was certain no others could see or hear them, and she halted and turned to face Caterina.

“I have something to tell you,” Frida murmured.

“Go ahead.” Caterina smiled warmly. “I am so happy you are here!”

“I wish I could be happy,” Frida muttered.

“What has transpired?” Caterina asked, horror dawning in her eyes.

Frida wrinkled her nose. “I have been a fool,” she mumbled.

“What makes you think that?”

“My parents… their hair…”

Caterina grimaced. “Have you learned who your father truly is?”

Frida blinked several times. “Pardon?”

“Forgive me,” Caterina said quickly. “Ignore me. I misspoke—”

“Nay, you spoke the truth. Tell me, did everyone know but me?”

“It is possible for two dark-haired persons to give birth to one with blond hair, but it does not happen oft, is all. I do not think many spent as much time with you as I have, and you and your father… You look so like your mother…”

“Save for the blond hair.”

Caterina nodded. “I do not know if anyone else suspected, but I did not know for certain, so I said nothing, and I never once heard anyone suggest it.”

“But they might not have spoken to you about it because of how close we are.” Frida rubbed her forehead. “Caterina, I have no father.”

“He is dead as well?”

“Nay, that is not what I mean.”

Caterina tilted her head to the side. “You can tell me anything, but it clearly hurts you, so if you do not wish to speak of it now, we can tomorrow or another day.”

“Nay. I need to speak of this.” Frida forced a smile. “Caterina, I have no father because a… a sorcerer used magic to help me come to be born.”

Caterina gasped. “You were born of magic? Does that make you a sorcerer?”

“I have no magic,” Frida reminded her.

“Mayhap you always have, but you merely did not know.”

“I will say that is not the case,” Frida said.

“No matter. That is something,” she mused. “Wow.”

“That is all you have to say?” Frida cried.

“What? My best friend is Queen of Narva and born through magical means. Why she bothers with me I will never understand.”

“I bother with you because you are my very best friend.”

“And for that, I am so happy. I don’t need anything else.”

Frida laughed, and the two embraced. “Thank you.”

“For listening? Of course.”

“Nay, for not judging me.”

Caterina drew back, her brow furrowed.
