THE telephone call was a surprise but a welcome one. Germán had come to like his nephew’s boyfriend, this naïve young white boy who had taken over Reynaldo’s heart. It pleased him that the liking and the trust worked in both directions. He was smiling as his secretary ushered the young man in, and offered his hand with genuine pleasure at seeing him.
“Very nice to see you, Mr. Parker,” he said, gesturing to a chair. “Would you like a cup of coffee while we talk? Oh, Miss Hewitt, would you bring coffee for Mr. Parker, please. Do you take it black? Or with cream, sugar?”
“Just black, thank you.”
“Now, how can I help you this morning?” Germán began. “I gather you wish to consult me professionally. I’m at your service.”
“Yes, uh… well, I’m not sure I know what I’m doing,” Dale said slowly. “But Rey told me you managed his money so that he can retire some day. I’d like to be able to do that too. I don’t earn a lot, but I put most of my tips into savings, so I have some money to invest.”
“And you decided to get started now rather than wait? Excellent. Ah, here’s coffee. Thank you, Miss Hewitt.”
“Yes, thank you, ma’am,” Dale echoed, smiling at the older woman who seemed to be in charge of Tío Germán’s office. He waited till she closed the door before he went on. “I didn’t realize you were a vice president, or I wouldn’t have bothered you. I only have about a thousand dollars. That’s probably not enough to get an account with you. But I wanted to ask, anyway.”
“Oh, I’m more than happy to open an account for you, Dale,” Germán said. “Don’t let the name plate on my desk fool you. We all start small and work our way up. Tell me what you have in mind, in general, and we can begin to make a plan for you.”
“Well, I don’t know, really. The money I’ve put aside, like I said, is from tips, and that’s pretty uneven. Some weeks I make fifty dollars, and some weeks I make fifteen. But I try to live on my actual salary and not count on the tips, so most of them I save. I won’t be able to bring you all of that, because part of it is going to pay for school. You know I’m going to the community college starting next semester, don’t you? Did Rey tell you that?”
“He did mention that, and I think it’s a wise course. So, you’re thinking you want to put aside most of your tips for investing, is that it?”
“Well, yes, I guess so. I mean, we were talking about maybe taking a couple of days and making a little vacation trip somewhere. Just to be in a different town for a bit, see a different part of the state. And I have to plan for school expenses. But other than that, my tips are my savings.”
“Do you have a regular savings account?” Germán asked, making notes on his pad.
