DETECTIVE PEECE STRAIGHTENED away from the car as they approached, reaching up to pull a pair of black-lensed aviator sunglasses off his face. “What the hell are you doing, Hinks? You’re supposed to be investigating the Muldane murder case, not digging around in the cold ashes of old cases.” The short, balding cop was built like a fire plug and, with his stunted, round nose and wide set brown eyes looked a bit like a bull dog.

Only not nearly as cute.

The Honeybun brothers hung back as Bud approached the other detective, a silent wall of support. Bud stopped in front of Peece, leaning into the other man’s airspace. “What exactly is your problem with Detective Muldane, Peece?”

“I got a problem with cop killers. Don’t you?”

Bud shook his head, looking at the ground as anger made his pulse throb painfully in his temples. “Have you ever considered that Muldane might be dead?”

The other cop blinked, his eyes widening just enough to let Bud know he’d surprised him. “You haven’t have you? She’s missing, Peece. As far as we know she’s as much a victim of this guy as the others.” He couldn’t help himself, he reached up and poked the other cop in the chest. “You’re so busy trying to hang her you’re not even looking at that side of things. I’m her partner and whether you like it or not I’m going to take a look at that.”

“She’s missing because she’s guilty,” Peece insisted.

“What’s her motive?” he asked again.

The other cop still didn’t have an answer.

“Yeah. See, that’s the problem isn’t it. Why would Brita kill those men? Men she worked amiably beside day after day. Men she respected and, in the case of the Sarge, even cared about. People don’t kill unless they have a reason, Peece. Until you give me a reason why Brita would have killed her fellow cops, I’m going to keep looking at possibilities that make more sense. Now get the hell out of my face or I’m going to shove you out of it.”

Peece bristled visibly, his wide jaw tightening and his shoulders squaring. He clenched his fists and leaned toward Bud, even lifting one hand. But then his gaze flicked past Bud and he paled slightly, backing away. With a final glare at Bud, Peece started around his car. “The Mary Tyler case is closed, Hinks. She has nothing to do with the murders of our brothers and every minute you waste on old cases is a minute longer their murders go unavenged.”

Peece opened the door of his Crown Vic but stopped as Bud responded. “We’re not in the business of revenge, Peece. I’m trying to find a killer and bring him to justice. I have no interest in indulging in vigilante justice. I hope you can say the same.”

Peece held Bud’s gaze a moment longer and then slipped into his car without responding.

As Peece drove away, the Honeybuns moved up on either side of Bud. He sighed. “You guys didn’t need to give him the Honeybun stink eye.
