CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

TWO UTILITY VEHICLES flew across the snow toward them. Jose was driving one and Clovis piloted the second vehicle. They came from two different directions, his brothers arriving first.

Clovis stopped in a wash of flying snow next to Nita and Heathcliffe. Alf hopped out and walked over to them. “We got most of the horses back in the barn. Only Noire and Jenna are still missing.”

Heathcliffe helped Nita into the seat beside Jose when he got there. She was still a little wobbly. “We had them, but then somebody started shooting at us and we had to let them go or we’d have been trampled.”

Clovis stood up in the vehicle, leaning over the windshield. “Shooting?”

“Apparently it was a trap. The shooter had Noire tied to a tree and when we came to get them he started firing.”

Nita nodded. “He followed us in a 4x4 and almost killed me.”

Heathcliffe explained what had happened to them in the meadow.

Alf shook his head. “This guy sounds like a pretty bad shot.”

“You read my mind.” Heathcliffe agreed. “He obviously was just trying to scare us.”

“But if it’s Max, why wouldn’t he shoot to kill?” Nita asked.

Heathcliffe squeezed her shoulder. “This is not a rational mind we’re dealing with so who knows, but my guess is he still hopes to get you to come with him. If he shoots me down in front of you it’s gonna be hard to reel you back in.”

She frowned. “I guess.”

“Should we go after him?”

Heathcliffe glanced at Clovis. “Not tonight. He’s long gone by now and it’s gonna be dark soon. We need to get Noire rounded up. We can come out in the morning and follow the shooter’s tracks.”

They searched for another hour and finally returned to the barn, dejected and worried about what they were going to tell Dolfe.

Snow had started to fall by the time they parked the utility vehicles in the storage shed next to the barn. Jose locked the shed and headed for the barn to feed the horses.

Nita walked over to the snow-covered bench at the edge of the drive and sat down, unwilling to go inside with her horse still roaming the countryside.

Heathcliffe sat down next to her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. “We’ll find them, firecracker. They’ll be fine.” Heathcliffe noted the unshed tears in her eyes and fought an urge to pound on her bastard ex-husband.

She sighed, biting her lip. “At least they have each other.”

He smiled, pulling her under his shoulder and kissing her forehead. “They do. Noire won’t let her out of his sight and he’s a formidable protector.” He just hoped Max didn’t decide to twist the knife by shooting one or both of the valuable animals. “We’ll go out as soon as it’s light and find them.”

She nodded, her head on his shoulder. Her continued silence over the next several minutes concerned Heathcliffe. He knew what she was thinking and he would do everything in his power to make sure she didn’t manage to run from him.
