Bea

My heart ticks wildly. The beat climbs to my throat, making it difficult to breathe. It happens this way in my recurring dream, but now the man’s face isn’t shrouded in the dark. The roar of water rapids is replaced by the crackle of the glowing fire.

I lean into Roman, studying the contour of his lips, the solid line of his jaw, and his unflinching eyes. He works his jaw, clenching his teeth. His fingers tighten around mine as his body grows increasingly tense. I study him, unable to look away.

The hum of magnetic energy that sparks between us sends a jolt of feel-good hormones skittering throughout my nervous system, derailing all logical thought. My entire body comes alive with the ultimate confession perched on the tip of my tongue.

Now’s the time. Our time. For a brief moment, we’re no longer subject to the shadow of outside influence. What happens here and now will forever be our secret, even if it all ends in a broken heart.

I tilt my chin, inhaling the heated friction between us. Fear grips my body, bracing for the rejection that’s sure to follow. I’ll never get what I want if I don’t have the nerve to ask for it.

“Every night, I have the same dream I’ve had since I was a teenager. I’m running, hiding in the trees by the water’s edge as a man watches me from the shadows. My friend at work says it means I’m running from something I can’t have.” I pause, daring myself to come out with it once and for all. “But I can’t stop wanting it. Can’t stop wanting you.” My voice falters to a whisper under the strain of Roman’s intense stare, but I don’t dare stop now. “I lie in bed at night thinking about you, your lips on mine, and your hands on my body. You’re the last thought of my day. When I wake, you and the dream are my first thoughts. My body trembles with an ache so deep I touch myself to the point I’ll go mad if I don’t come.”

“Fuck, Bea.” Roman’s eyes darken, haunting me like they do in the dream.

“I’ve been in love with you for as long as I’ve known what love is.” My insides flutter nervously. “You don’t have to love me back or say the words, but give me the dream for one night?”

“I’ll give you every damn thing you want,” Roman growls as his restraint comes undone.

His groan echoes in my chest as he rolls over me with his heavy body, pinning me to the blanketed floor with his weight. My body tingles as he tucks me under him, possessive and protective. I’ve never felt safer and more sure of anything in my life.

I gaze up at him, teetering on the edge and impatient. This could be the start of something fantastic or the end of us as we know it. Either way, my life will be forever altered, never the same again. His eyes close, feather soft as he dips his chin.
