Katie had another surprise for Christy the next morning.

The two of them were at the coffee bar located inside the main lodge at Brockhurst Conference Center. This was where Katie volunteered as a barista whenever groups were using the conference center. The “Lion’s Den” lodge was empty this morning, and Katie had eagerly coaxed Christy to join her here after breakfast so she could demonstrate her skills.

“Go ahead.” Katie slid a steaming beverage in front of Christy. “Try it.”

This wasn’t the first time Katie had presented Christy with one of her tea-based concoctions. The homegrown herbal blend Katie created when they were college roommates had produced a rash on the underside of Christy’s forearms and on her neck, so she had reason to be skeptical.

“Go ahead,” Katie urged eagerly.

Christy blew across the top of the foamy drink and hoped this new African tea creation of Katie’s wouldn’t have the same adverse effect as the herbal attempt. Her stomach had calmed down enough for her to eat some hot cereal that morning, and she didn’t want to upset the delicate balance.

With a brave bending of her elbow, Christy drew the mug to her lips and took a sip. She felt the soothing touch of the steaming-hot beverage as it slinked down her throat. “Oh, this is nice.”

“Told ya.”

Christy drew in a deeper breath of the spicy chai tea. The robust flavor came from the added dark chocolate and steamed milk.

“The first time Eli made one of these for me, I thought it tasted like a really good spice cake with great chocolate frosting. Only in liquid form.” Katie went back to work preparing the same specialty beverage for herself.

“What’s it called again?”

“It’s a Malindi Chai Mocha. They’re addicting, by the way. So when you have to join a support group one of these days and confess to the others that you have a problem with over consumption of Malindi Chai Mochas, I’m sure my name will come up.”

Christy grinned and took another sip. She gazed out the large windows of the upper part of the lodge. When Katie had used the terms compound and headquarters to describe this place and said that the center was gated with guards, Christy pictured sparse grounds with cement-block dormitories. Christy had seen a few pictures but always thought Katie was capturing only the most appealing corners of the conference center.

Not so. The entire grounds reminded Christy of a well-kept resort with an impressive main lodge surrounded by a number of outlying buildings and clusters of simple, charming stone cottages.

Last night it had been too dark to see much when they arrived. But this morning when Christy and Todd took the path from their cottage to the dining hall for breakfast, she was awed by the rolling green lawns with trimly cut grass that spread out like a thick, inviting carpet. The air was chilly and a fine mist hung over the tops of the tallest trees. They were greeted by birds that had a song she’d never heard before.
