The woman at the center of it all, Yuriko Hanayashiki, was sitting in the maidâs room next door. The room had a bed, an armchair, a desk, and a chair. It was a splendid living space, but since the group had just come from Hanakoâs room, it felt much plainer in comparison.
Yuriko, who was sitting in the armchair, looked uneasy. She seemed to have sensed that something was different from usual. Her hands were fidgeting in her lap.
âSince Yurikoâs blind and deaf, we canât explain the situation to her, huh?â Akihito murmured, feeling sorry for the woman.
âNo.â The maid shook her head. âI was told that Miss Yuriko was born healthy but became very ill at the age of six. That was when she lost her eyesight and hearing. However, she was very smart, so she could already read and write perfectly by then. We use these to communicate with her.â She took out a board and wooden blocks engraved with hiragana characters. There were multiple sets provided so the same character could be used more than once.
âI see,â said Kiyotaka. âYouâve thought this through.â He lightly tapped Yuriko on the arm and spelled out a sentence on the board.
âHello, my name is Yagashira.â
Yuriko removed the last four words, leaving only âHello.â She bowed. Then she rearranged the blocks into a new phrase.
âWho are you?â
Kiyotaka thought for a moment before reluctantly writing his sentence.
âI am a detective.â
âOh, you finally admit it!â Akihito teased him.
Kiyotaka grimaced. âI considered saying I was the police, but I donât want to lie.â Saying he was a detective was the fastest way to explain the situation in a short phrase without lying.
He spelled out another sentence on the board.
âYour mother was attacked by a burglar and injured.â
Yuriko covered her face with both hands in shock.
âDid you notice anything?â
The womanâs hands were still on her face. She wasnât aware that Kiyotaka had asked her a question.
âKiyotaka, do you have a minute?â asked Fuyuki.
âYes.â The detective gently patted Yuriko on the shoulder and stood up.
âThe violin really was from the drawing room. Come with me real quick.â
Kiyotaka and Akihito went back to the first floor with Fuyuki.
