Josh’s garage fit what I’d expected—storage boxes stacked at the far end and a high-end motorcycle parked on the left side of the two-car bay.

His home, however, wasn’t at all what I’d imagined.

I’d pictured a bachelor pad with lots of black leather and chrome and a modern aesthetic. Though why I thought that made no sense—he had a genuine, guy-next-door kind of character. Instead of mod-man furnishings, I viewed a comfortable, homey place decorated in earth tones, with scattered, unopened boxes ringing the perimeter of the great room. A large, tan, suede, U-shaped couch faced a fireplace with a large TV mounted over the mantel, and a kitchen with a peninsula island stood beyond the living area.

“Sorry for the state of things. Still moving in. Can I get you something to drink before I show you to your room?”

My room. He actually had a guest room space for me. No subterfuge to get me into the “one bed in the house” scenario. “No thanks. I had what was termed coffee at the hospital. Besides, we both need to be up for work in a few hours.”

“True enough. ‘Bout time to get you started on that sleep. You’ll be at the end of the hall.” He pointed down a corridor.

Patting his shoulder, I stopped him. “I know I wasn’t very appreciative of your offer earlier, but I wanted to say thanks. You’re a lifesaver.”

A shy half-smile curled his lips. “Anytime. C’mon.” He waved a hand.

I followed him toward the door. He opened it and revealed a large room done in deep blues with a king-sized bed centering the space. I halted in the jamb. “This is the primary bedroom. Yours.”

“Tonight, it’s yours. I’ll be in the one on the left.”

I pivoted and opened the nearby room’s door, even though he’d reached out as if to halt me. Stacked boxes lined one wall, and a lone sleeping bag lay unrolled on the floor.

He looked sheepish. “I hadn’t bought a bed for this room yet. Not a priority at the time.”

The generosity of this man…but I’d already put him out enough. “Sleep in your own space, Josh. I can take the couch.” A sleeping bag, even on a carpeted floor, did not appeal.

“I like to camp, remember? Sleeping bags are okay. Listen, I’ve set out a T-shirt of mine for you to sleep in. You can run by your place in the morning to change clothes for work. I’ll drive the motorcycle in, and you take the SUV.”

Tired mugged me to the point I couldn’t rally an argument. Time to concede. For now. “Okay. We’ll talk more in the morning.”

He led me into the room, pointing out the oversized gray tee and the new-in-wrapper toothbrush and unused tube of toothpaste in the bathroom, then let himself out.

Being in this room, enveloped in his personal space, made me feel special, cherished, his. But I wasn’t. At least not yet. The tired is talking. Go to bed.

I eyed the shower but decided sleep was more
