Dear Eric,

Cousin Nadine and Harold had to change planes in Denver. Now they’re stuck at the airport there until the weather clears.

Had so much food it seemed a shame not to share. Found your friend Mindy’s address in the phone book. So we’ve gone to surprise her poor father with a nice big Christmas dinner.

Love,

Mom

“Oh, no!”

He crumpled the note into a ball as he ran to his SUV. Jumping in, he tossed it on the passenger seat as he hurriedly started the engine.

He didn’t know if he was madder at his mother or himself. Self-loathing won out. He’d brought this on himself by misleading his mother. He’d wanted to quell her matchmaking mania, and now she was on her way for a confrontation with a man who thought he was married.

What had he told her about Wayne? Oh, yeah, his injury was acting up, and he wanted to spend the day on the couch. His dad had agreed it was a sensible decision, so why had he gone along with hauling Christmas dinner to people they’d never met?

Sometimes Dad took the path of least resistance, and it was always easier to go along with Mom than thwart her plans. Eric was guilty of doing the same thing. He didn’t have to work on her committee. He could’ve said no. He was as bad as Mindy at not standing up to a parent.

Mindy! He drove faster, thankful for the sparse Christmas Day traffic. With luck he’d get there only minutes behind his parents. Mindy was at the epicenter of a potentially huge explosion. If Wayne and his mother started unraveling their tangle of lies and half-truths, both parents were going to be very angry. He couldn’t let Mindy take the heat alone.

Then there was the part about being married and getting back with his wife. Her father believed it. What if Mindy did, too? How would his mother react?

It was a balmy December day in the desert community, but he broke out in a cold sweat. He might lose Mindy forever, and suddenly that was his worst fear.

When he got to her subdivision, he had to park in front of a neighbor’s house. The spot behind Mindy’s van in the carport was taken, and his parents’ Lincoln occupied the space in front of her house.

The place looked deceptively peaceful. He walked to the front door and rang the bell.

Mindy answered.

“We have a problem,” she whispered urgently.

She was beautiful in a flowery red dress. He’d been an absolute idiot to let her leave after he treated Peaches.

“Let’s get out of here!” he said.

He reached for her hand, but she backed away, forcing him to follow her into chaos. The TV was blaring, and his father was staring glassy-eyed at the screen while Wayne’s friend shouted instructions to a coach half a continent away. Laurie was putting dishes on the counter, and the almost overwhelming scent of roasted turkey suggested dinner was ready. Mindy’s friend waved, but kept her focus on the task at hand.
