Chapter 4

“You’re a fucking werewolf,” I repeated dumbly. Was this really happening?

The wolf in front of me looked back, the eyes in it still Bane. He tipped his head, and I understood what he was trying to say without words. I crossed the few steps between us, and tentatively reached out a hand toward his soft fur. He leaned into my touch, nearly purring beneath my hand. I wasn’t scared. I knew I should be. But I wasn’t afraid in the slightest. My instinct told me I was safe, and Bane had told me this as well.

I smiled, stroking the fuzz on the back of his neck. “You know, you’re kind of cute like this.”

He growled, a low sound in the back of his throat, and I smiled wider. After a few moments, Bane pulled away, stepping back a safe distance away. The shift back to human was smoother, less gruesome than the shift to the wolf. In a few moments, Bane stood in front of me again, still keeping his distance.

“Are you okay? With me, I mean. With this.” He ran his hands through his hair. “Shit. Say something.”

I chewed on the inside of my cheek. “I’m not scared of you, Bane. You promised you wouldn’t hurt me. So yes, I’m okay. But … how does it work?”

He smiled, and gave me a quiet shrug. “The simple answers?”

“Whatever you want to give me is okay by me.”

“I was born this way. My brothers and I. It’s in our blood. It doesn’t have to be a full moon, but it definitely helps make the shift easier.” He looked up at the bright moon overhead, lost in thought for a while. “We have our own pack, the three of us. Somehow, they decided I was in charge. Colt is my Beta. Hudson focuses on security.”

I wasn’t surprised he was in charge, but I still had more questions. “And your wolf form, is it separate from you? Do you hear them? How does it work?”

He thought about it for a moment. “It’s like hearing my thoughts, but two sets of them. My wolf has their own mind. Their own set of likes and dislikes, needs and wants. So I can hear them inside me, but I know it’s not me. If that makes sense.”

It did. Strangely enough, it made sense.

“You still okay?” He looked like he wanted to hug me, but was keeping his distance until I approved it.

I nodded. “I’m good. I promise.” A smirk grew on my face. “Not what I expected when you dragged me out of my house earlier, but hey, beggars can’t be choosers.”

Bane laughed, and his shoulders relaxed. He looked a thousand times younger, and finally closed the distance between us, and grabbed my face in his hands. “You took all of that information like a champ. God, you’re fucking amazing.”

I laughed. “Far from it.”

“No, you are. You’re stunning, and curvy, and smart, and witty, and you just watched me turn into a wolf, and you aren’t running away.
