CHAPTER SIX
JAKE was shocked into speechlessness. It was the very last thing heâd expected, and spelt the end of even the most tentative of his dreams.
His brain was empty of everything apart from the fact that there was a baby growing inside Maggieâ¦a baby that could never be a part of his life and would ultimately take Maggie away from him.
It was pure selfishness on his part that his first reaction was denial. Heâd loved Maggie for so long that he didnât want anything to come between them, especially now, when she was sharing his home. It was the closest he would ever come to marriage and, apart from the frustration of not sharing her bed, he was savouring every moment.
Of course heâd known from the first that sharing his flat would only be a temporary measure, just until she got her life back on track again. It would only be a matter of time before her salary rose closer to his and she would be able to afford to buy something of her own.
What was going to happen now?
âMaggie?â He finally turned to speak to her, needing some answers to the questions boring holes in his head and his heart, but she wasnât there any more. For just a moment he was paralysed by the fear that sheâd left the flat altogether, let down by the fact that he hadnât offered any support, then he heard the sound of the shower and almost collapsed with relief.
âSheâs still here,â he breathed, and lowered himself to the arm of the settee on shaky legs, grateful that he hadnât blown it completely. He still had tonight to get his thoughts together. âI can talk to her in the morning.â
Two days later he was still trying to pin her down, and the longer it went on the more he wondered exactly what heâd said to her that she should be avoiding him so deliberately.
Heâd barely come to terms with her announcement even now, and certainly couldnât remember what heâd said to herâif anything.
He couldnât remember much more about what sheâd said either. Had she told him whether she was going to continue with her job as soon as her maternity leave was over? Or was she going to wait until the child was older before she returned to her profession?
Most importantly, had she told him whether she was going to be getting married after all? And, if so, to whom?
He knew the baby couldnât be Liamâs, but he hadnât realised that sheâd started another relationship since their night together.
He snorted in derision. How could he know when heâd spent the last few weeks trying so hard not to let Maggie know how he felt about her that heâd actually taken to avoiding herâand in a busy A and E department that was no mean feat.
Now she was employing the same avoidance tactics, including changing her shifts so that she arrived home long after heâd gone to bed.
Not that he was sleeping very well,
