"I'm home!"

Heather grinned and pulled the roast out of the oven. The house was filled with the savory smell of cooking beef, a smell that always made Heather think of home.

"Something smells good," Edward came into the kitchen and slipped his arms around Heather's chest.

Her husband was taller than Bradley by a head and he had once been quite the athlete, something he never let his son forget. When they had met ten years before, Edward had been a strong, handsome man with a still hard body and a great job. He still had a good job and was handsome, but he had lost the athlete's physique. Years of comfortable living now presented itself as a round paunch hanging over his belt. He had also lost his strong, erect posture, his shoulders rounded forward which gave him the appearance that he was shrinking.

She had joked when they were first married that he would be a cute, old man. She didn't make that joke anymore.

"Where's Bradley?" Edward asked as he hugged her from behind.

"He's at a party."

"Our Bradley?" Edward said, surprised.

"Yes!" she laughed. "Our Bradley! Evidently he's made a friend on the football team. Damian Winters."

"What? The quarterback?"

Layton County was a small community and, for a few months each fall the boys on the football field were celebrities. Heather wasn't from Layton originally, so the local adoration for the athletes didn't affect her.

Edward had played on the Layton County team and followed the team religiously. His main gripe about traveling this time of year wasn't being away from his family; it was missing football games.

"Yes," she said and turned to face her husband. A sudden image of Damian flashed through her mind. "The quarterback."

"Well, that's good!" Edward said. "I guess it's just the two of us, huh?"

They stood looking at each other for an awkward moment. There wasn't any real promise or innuendo in Edward's comment, just weary happiness to be home with his loving wife. She thought of Damian again, the memory of his muscular body making the heat rise in her belly, mixing with the shame.

Edward was the first to pull away, her warm body not enough to keep his attention. He took a piece of roast off the plate and popped it into his mouth.

"So," he said. "Ready to eat?"

Dinner was a quiet affair. They talked about Edward's trip and how life had been at home. Heather was surprised how quickly they settled into the comfortable, boring rhythm of a married couple.

That didn't stop the burning in her body that Damian had sparked that afternoon. As she ate, and drank more wine than was good for her, she found it hard not to think of the handsome, black man. She had to force herself to focus on Edward's words and she made the decision during dinner that she would use this excitement to give Edward a proper welcome home.

"What are you doing?" Edward asked later when she snuggled up against him in bed.

"I missed you," she moaned in what she hoped was a sexy voice.
