Chris Martin also produced music for his group Inner Circle Posse (ICP), which consisted of friends from Prairie View A&M University. One day, he let Styles listen to ICP’s demo tape. As soon as Styles heard the demo, he knew that he had to do something with it. By 1989, Styles had developed tight relationships with record labels in New York, so he contacted Stu Fine of Wild Pitch Records to sell him on the demo and encourage a meeting. Martin was already traveling back and forth between Houston and New York (staying with his grandfather while in New York), so it was easy for him to meet with Fine. Fine showed artist/A&R representative Keith Elam (Guru) the demo, and they both loved Martin’s skills. Guru had a need for a new DJ for his group Gang Starr, so he brought on Martin, who soon changed his name to DJ Premier and began crafting the 1990s New York sound.169
