REELECTION
Bill was up for reelection in 1996 and would face an established Republican challenger in longtime Kansas Senator Bob Dole, who had opposed health-care reform.
This time, Hillary had a low-key role. Some aides saw her as “damaged goods” because of the failure of the health-care effort and the endless Whitewater questions, but at the same time, Bill didn’t need as much help. He didn’t have competitors in the primaries, and in the fall campaign, he could boast of a stronger economy, a drop in crime, and the beginning of a technology boom.
Hillary spent part of the summer taking Chelsea to visit six colleges in the Northeast—Amherst, Brown, Harvard, Princeton, Wellesley, and Yale—ahead of her senior year. At Chelsea’s insistence, they also traveled to California to check out Stanford University in Palo Alto. That would become her first choice, despite her mother’s reservations that it was a long way from Washington.
Politically, Hillary remained divisive. Dole singled her out during his speech at the Republican National Convention by taking a swipe at her book. “We are told that it takes a village … and thus the state, to raise a child,” he said. “The state is now more involved than it ever has been in the raising of children.”
“With all due respect,” he continued to cheering Republicans, “I am here to tell you it does not take a village to raise a child. It takes a family to raise a child.”
Hillary would get the last word. Eleanor Roosevelt had spoken at a convention in 1940, but since then, only a few First Ladies—all Republicans—had spoken at a national convention. In 1996, Hillary would make her own speech, pointing out that her village wasn’t the government; it was teachers, clergy, businesspeople, and community leaders.
