CHAPTER 8: HARVEYS MISJUDGEMENT

The air was bitterly cold. A few lights were flickering in the surrounding buildings. No one was about on the dark streets, people only travelled in cars, and most humans were snuggled up in their homes, like animals in a pen. Harvey kicked the sidewalk as the cars rolled past. He glanced around, lowering his hat over his eyes. Faint screams of men, women, and children echoed around the streets. Harvey shivered. A few army trucks passed us, with an ambulance close behind them. Harvey began to pick up his pace, walking faster now. He turned a corner and ascended a staircase. He opened the door and went into an apartment on the first floor and locked the door.

He placed his hat on the coat rack near the door and took off his brown trench coat and with a sigh, he entered the living room. He sat down and glanced at the newspaper on the table, the title read ‘New York’s evacuation to happen over the next three days.’

There was a shuffle of footsteps to the left side of him, he turned his head.

“What are you doing boy?” He asked Micah who was holding a box of Lucky Charms in his hands.

“Just getting food uncle.” He responded.

Harvey picked up a cigarette and put it to his lips. He grabbed a lighter.

“Your dad will be here to get you soon … I suggest you start packing.” Harvey urged his nephew. Micah reached his hand into the box of Lucky Charms, pulled out a few of the marshmallows and ate them.

“Fine,” he said crossly with his mouth full before thundering off to his bedroom.

The sound of more army trucks and ambulances rolling past made Harveys skin crawl. He inhaled his cigarette, the tobacco seeping into his lungs like fire. Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. Harvey flinched. He wasn’t expecting anyone aside from Julian who normally texted him beforehand. There was another knock. Standing up slowly, he looked at the clock on the wall, it read: 5:00pm. Micah poked his head out from his bedroom door.

“Who is it Uncle Harvey?” he asked, flicking his brown hair to one side. Harvey picked up a handgun off the table.

“Stay there Micah,” he said steadily. Micah gave him a sharp nod and disappeared back into his bedroom. Harvey inched closer to the door, the brass handle oddly shaking. Harvey pressed himself against the door, listening intensely. A low groan and heavy breathing sounded from the other side of the door. Bracing himself, Harvey opened the door. Almost instantaneously, a deformed corpse came bursting through the door, it’s mouth dripping. Harvey was shoved backwards, and the door fell on top of him. He lay still, watching Micah through his open bedroom door. The young boy was clutching himself, curled up in the corner of his bedroom. The zombie that had entered leapt on top of the door, almost crushing Harvey, who knew he had to stay still … and quiet. He could see that his nephew's eyes were filled with terror as the deformed corpse inched towards him.
