Chapter Twenty

Merewen followed Sela through a door along the wall of the passageway. She stepped inside, surprised to find herself in another, brighter passageway.

Sela led them past a few doors, then opened one and stood back, allowing them to look inside. The chamber held six beds, covered with fluffy mattresses and thick furs. A smattering of books sat on a shelf. Two women were asleep, while one sat on the bed doing needlework. She even smiled at them.

“This is where my lasses live. Don’t they look happy? No men to order them around, they have no one to bother them at all.”

“What about you?” Constance asked. “Must they do what you tell them?”

The only change in Sela’s face was a slight narrowing of her gaze before it returned to normal. “True, they must do as I say, or there would be naught but chaos. Consider me their laird. Come along. I want you to see what you could be. You—” she surprised Merewen by pointing at her, “—you are special. I can see it in your eyes.”

Merewen did not respond to the compliment, but instead looked away. Sela moved along, and they followed her. As they progressed down the passageway, she could hear men whistling and hollering—friendly but loud. When they reached the end, the passageway opened into a large chamber similar to the one the men where Daniel and Connor had found their victories.

There in the middle stood two women, each dressed in a long, fancy robe decorated with sparkly gemstones. Their hair was plaited tightly to the tops of their heads, and they both had dispassionate gazes as they looked out over the group of men seated in front of them. The man who stood between the two of them held his hand up and said, “Prepare yourselves.”

Sela turned to Merewen and said, “The urge to fight is innate in some people. You are one of them. You will beat every opponent you meet, regardless of where. I can see it in your eyes. You have a burning desire to win. Watch and enjoy. Picture yourself as the victor of all the women here, because you will beat them all. You’ll be admired by all the men, and you’ll make huge bags of coins for your efforts.”

“You think I want to fight? I don’t wish to fight anyone.” She worried she’d be considered trouble, but she persisted anyway, eager for any information that might lead her to Linet. “So what would you do with me? And what about my friend?” Merewen asked, clamping her mouth shut, suddenly afraid she’d gone too far.

Sela was not the least bit upset by her comments. “I have another place I’d put her. She has special skills but of a different kind.” Sela smiled. Her smile never reached her eyes. Connor had accurately described her as a ruthless and cold woman.

She had ice inside, coursing through her veins.

Drawn to the battle that was about to take place in front of her, Merewen ended her questions and shifted her attention to the lasses in front of her.
