Dressing It Up

The week leading up to the wedding was, as they always were, hectic.

Ewan didn’t have time to breathe, let alone think of all the ways he’d crossed a line. Again. He didn’t know what was coming over him other than desire so raw, it matched the slaughtered venison delivered for that night’s wedding breakfast. He couldn’t control himself, and he prided himself on being a pillar of restraint, discipline, and self-control. In his youth, he’d been reckless when in the city, but he’d learned. He wouldn’t have got to where he was in his profession had he continued on his wild path. He was now meticulous. Careful. Constrained and scrupulous. To the point of having ruined everything he’d ever had other than his career.

He’d lost friends, family, loved ones, all so he could be the Laird of Largleith.

But Dean Fraser had caused a complete and utter infatuation for something else. Him. He had a wanton attraction that wasn’t being appeased by stolen kisses in the dark. He ached and burned for more. It didn’t help that Dean had talent. His mouth was proving to have more uses than the one Ewan wanted to make good on. He knew his flavours. Could recognise the ingredients in a blind taste test. Could reproduce a recipe from a tiny sample. A fantastic cook with unique ideas and a creative flare for the culinary arts, Dean was everything he’d been searching for. He hadn’t expected to fall in love again.

With food, that was.

Teaching Dean the wedding menu had restored Ewan’s spark for cooking.

Which was why when Lilah entered his office on the Saturday morning, his heart sank when she delivered the bad news. “I’m going to need Dean.”

Ewan swivelled from his full-length mirror, buttoning up his chef’s jacket over his kilt. It was a wedding. The bride, whose father was paying a fortune for exclusive use of Castle Largleith, demanded that he, as the Executive Chef, be in the traditional Highland dress. “Why?”

“Bryce has called in sick. I’m short on servers.”

“So call the agency. You can’t steal one of my cooks.”

“You said yourself you wanted them to know all areas of the restaurant, this is a chance for him to experience Front of House.”

“Lilah, Dean’s one of the better cooks. You said it yourself. He’s been the first one in, and the last one to leave every night. He’s perfected every dish on this menu. Even the other contestant are taking him seriously. He’s not the underdog anymore. I want him.”

Lilah arched an eyebrow.

“On my team,” Ewan added in afterthought, no matter how true the first statement had been.

Ewan tried not to think how Dean’s early morning arrivals and late night lingering could be to spend time with him. Ewan had been avoiding it. Him. Despite a moment in the walk-in when they had almost reenacted the first kiss, except for the fearing-for-their-lives part, Ewan had kept his word and stayed away. It was no mean feat, considering there were too many nooks and crannies in a castle for them to hide in.
