Wide, flexible snowboards are used for halfpipe tricks. The snowboard was invented in the 1960s.
Artificial snow
Technology can also be used to help the weather for the Winter Olympics. At one Vancouver venue in 2010, snow cannons were used to create artificial snow because not enough real snow had fallen. The cannons shoot water and air out of a nozzle into the cold air. This turns to ice before it hits the ground.
High-tech Paralympics
The Paralympic Games happen every four years, just after the Olympic Games. They are the biggest sporting event for athletes with disabilities. Cutting-edge technology enables many Paralympic athletes to compete at the Games, together with their own incredible skill and determination.
