CHAPTER SEVEN
The sound of his cell door sliding open roused Gillan a second time, and he realized in panic that heâd fallen asleep. His head still ached but not with the debilitating intensity heâd felt previously. He scrambled up to find two peacekeepers confronting him with dour expressions. One gestured impatiently. âCome on. Itâs time.â
He caught himself before he asked what had happened to Kurejka. He wondered if this was part of her plan or whether heâd imagined the late-night conversation. He slid to his feet unsteadily and the guards grabbed his arms, jerking him toward the door. Muscles bruised by his previous experiences protested but Gillan kept his silence, allowing them to guide him along the hall. As they approached the interrogation room however, he balked with rising panic. He wondered whether sheâd changed her mind and decided that he was expendable after all. Or perhaps sheâd used the entire conversation as a cruel ploy, to raise his hopes and leave him vulnerable.
It appeared that the same interrogator presided this time as well, as far as Gillan could judge. Or maybe Unification recruited a particular type to fulfill the typical image. The tall, thin man waiting within the interrogation room settled his shades into place and barked with impatience. âGet him on the table. We have a full schedule today.â
Gillan resisted with everything he had, twisting in the guardsâ grasp and kicking them. His heel set the examining table tilting drunkenly on its pivot, and the interrogator turned in surprise to watch the struggle. The end result remained the same as a jolt paralyzed him one again. The room spun as the guards righted the table and threw him onto it, although he felt nothing. Before they could activate the force field, a sudden, blaring noise split the air, making both guards look up in surprise while the interrogator scowled in irritation at the interruption. The door at the far end of the room opened to admit the Head of Militia, looking cool and unruffled in a crisp uniform. âDonât you hear the alarm?â she snapped. âWeâre under attack. Go secure the area right now.â
The guards released Gillan to obey immediately, and their footsteps echoed down the cell hall as they ran. As the interrogator opened his mouth to address his commander she drew a weapon and fired. He collapsed without a sound. Kurejka regarded Gillan. âCan you walk?â
For answer he struggled to make his tingling limbs move. His legs folded under him when he attempted to stand, and she watched impassively as he dragged himself upright, using the examining table to brace himself. After a few tense seconds, he found himself able to stand and she gave a nod of satisfaction.
âGood,â she pronounced. âWe donât have much time.â She returned to the door through which sheâd entered with her weapon still held ready, and looked up and down before slipping through. Gillan followed shakily with his hands still tingling as life returned to them. He took in the
