CHAPTER TEN

He hated when his cases merged with an active police investigation.

It was one thing for Jimmy to handle his own clients, trail a wayward husband or wife, dig into a person’s questionable background, expose a fraud or a lying cheat. Those were his bread and butter and kept him going on the mean streets. When a case comes smeared with actual blood, things take a decidedly darker turn. A life was lost, a family shattered, unfulfilled dreams obliterated with the single blast of a gun, isn’t that what the press always seemed to focus on? The victim as saint, the assailant not fit for society. Jimmy always wondered how the criminal felt while watching news of a manhunt for him. How had his deadly action, whether impulsive or premeditated, altered him? Did it make him that much more dangerous, a career criminal realizing he had nothing left to lose, so why not go out in a blaze of glory while on the prowl for his next victim. Or was he burrowed deep somewhere, a wounded animal, cornered, shocked by what he had done and uncertain of his next move. One scenario painted danger, the other desperation.

Reading the mind of a killer sometimes took knowing the moves of the victim.

Since leaving the Rothschild duplex, Jimmy had pondered one thing: Had Saul’s murder been random, a rich man out at a time he shouldn’t be, falling victim to wrong place/wrong time, or had he been specifically targeted, perhaps by a disgruntled client? It had probably been years since the senior partner at the law firm of Acton, Rothschild, Sutter & Hartley had seen serious courtroom action, much less associated with the criminal element. Saul Rothschild was the type to keep his hands clean, at least in the eyes of his associates, having gone all corporate spreadsheets and high-powered lunches, all while doling out cases to the lesser tenured members of his firm. Among them, his sister, Mallory.

But it wasn’t yet time to deal with lawyers. The cops had the case first.

So Jimmy set out for the 10th Precinct on that late Saturday afternoon.

The weather couldn’t make up its mind if mid-March was winter or spring. Out of the sunshine, a persistent chill permeated the air, only to disappear as Jimmy crossed the street and felt the sun’s warm rays hit his face. He’d stick to the glare. He’d felt enough of a cold front already today. Death had a way of doing that, especially this time of year. St. Patrick’s Day was less than a week away, which meant so too was what he thought of as St. Joseph’s Day. When his father went violently to his grave.

Jimmy had mixed feelings about cops.

He probably would have been one had that fateful day not occurred.

But it had, and here he was, working on their side of the law but on his own terms.

He reached West 20th Street and the corner of Eighth Avenue, turned down the block to a sea of blue-and-white NYPD cruisers parked at angles on the street.
