Chapter Fifteen – Clancy

“You want me to light a candle.” Gruff rolled his eyes as he stared at the candle with the utmost suspicion. “But it’s not dark.”

“Candles aren’t only supposed to be lit when it’s dark,” Clancy explained patiently for the tenth time that afternoon.

“But that’s what candles are for. We light them when the power goes out.” Gruff placed it down on the counter of the town hardware store and went back to sorting through a tray of various nuts and bolts.

“Just try it. The scent is amazing.” Clancy took out a lighter and flicked it open.

“Fire hazard,” Gruff murmured.

Gruff will know all about hazards if he doesn’t do as we ask and light the damn candle, Clancy’s wolf said.

“It’s safe to burn inside.” Keely had been hanging back, not interfering in Clancy’s diction with Gruff. But she was tired of listening to excuses, and that was all Gruff had, excuses, and she wasn’t the only one. Clancy could feel pressure inside his head, it was building slowly, but it wouldn’t take too much for him to explode.

Doesn’t he know his pack leader is telling him to do something? Clancy’s wolf was equally tetchy.

He knows, he’s just choosing to ignore it. Clancy placed his hand down on the box of nuts and bolts, preventing Gruff from working.

“Light the candle.” Clancy’s eyes glowed a deep amber and Gruff was mesmerized by them.

“Okay, you only had to ask,” Gruff’s voice wavered, and he picked up the candle and held it out to Clancy.

“Better.” Clancy flicked the lighter and guided the flame to the candle wick. A second later, the store was filled with the scent of the candle. Clancy thought he’d be immune to Keely’s spell by now since this was the final candle from the two boxes they had given out.

But as the flame flickered, he was taken far away from the hardware store with its hammers and nails. As he stared at the flame and the scent surrounded him, he closed his eyes. When he opened them again, he was in the mountains, the wind in his fur and grass beneath his paws.

“Whoa!” Gruff forgot all about the nuts and bolts that needed sorting as he too was transported to a different time and place.

Throughout the afternoon, they found that each person had a different experience. They were each taken to a slightly different part of the mountain. Usually, a spot that meant something special to them.

Clancy wanted to stay a spell and explore the inner realm of his mind, but they needed to get to the warehouse and prepare for the announcement about the candle factory. With some effort, Clancy blew the candle out and the vision surrounding him faded.

“What did you do that for?” Gruff’s voice was soft, filled with wonder.

“There’s somewhere we need to be,” Clancy told him. “And you need to be there, too.”

“I’d like to stay right here.” Gruff reached out and curled his hand possessively around the candle.

“It wasn’t a request,” Clancy seemed to be getting the hang of ordering his pack around.
