Chapter 8

I surveyed the contained mess of the shop, trying to figure out the best place to start. The sales floor, like my mind, was all a jumble. If the MAW was to be believed, I might be one of the most powerful witches alive. Or, at the very least, one of the strongest who was public with their powers. That in and of itself seemed surreal. And impossible. So I had levitated a car in a moment of extreme adrenaline. Human mothers did the same thing to save their children from time to time. I’d seen the news stories. And they always did it with muscle over magic.

I sat on the floor behind the counter and started pulling together the paper receipts and invoices strewn across the floor, trying my best to refile them by date. Uncle Gardner had insisted on physical bookkeeping when he turned the place over to me. He didn’t trust computers. Thought they were too easy to trick, to hack, to erase. Though I bet he’d never expected some Moral Authority lackeys to turn his system on its head in less than an hour on a random Monday morning.

The fucking Moral Authority of Witches. They certainly had an interesting way of wooing their recruits. First they wined and dined me with a super expensive meal, plied me with alcohol while their sexy division head flirted from across the table. He was flirting, right? The pout of his lip in my memory sure said he was. Then they ransacked my store while filling my head with flattery like the combination of violence and ego-stroking would make me their lap dog. And the whole time they had my boyfriend held captive in some off-books dungeon doing Fae knows what to him. And not in a way that either of us would enjoy.

Was that a part of their recruitment tactics? Were they using Cernun as a bargaining chip to make me do what they wanted? I couldn’t put it past them. From the stories I’d heard, and now, through my albeit rather limited firsthand experience, they were not the most forthcoming with their intentions and would do whatever they needed to get their way.

But Learco Clarke had protected me from Cressida Troy at the Botanical Gardens. And, if my intuition was to be believed, there were moments during our dinner when he seemed somewhat pained to be doing what he was doing. Or maybe it was just some false attempt at empathy to bring me to his side.

His warning that Cernun wasn’t who I thought he was echoed through my brain. I’d known the man—intimately—for over three years! I knew his favorite color (black) and what milk alternative he preferred on his cereal (oat). I knew which sigh meant he was tired and which moan meant he was horny. I knew when he wore the gray sweatpants with the stretched out cuffs at the ankles and the perfect outline of his huge cock that he was ready to go, and that, when he had the blue sweats on, it was time to cuddle on the couch and watch a movie.
