This is an essay I wrote about the accident, which was published when I was in graduate school at the University of Iowa. I was going to write a memoir of the accident. Of course over the years I realized that this was all I had to say about the story of accident, that the accident was a proper noun, it had a look and a feel and an effect and a personality. I thought about how we name storms that destroy people’s lives and the known world of nature and how we don’t have language for other sorts of things that happen to our bodies. How the technology of language is so limited when it comes to the complexities of the human heart and mind and how we use these blunt-force words like death and loss and accident. Perhaps this is why Monterey pine’s cone, designed to be super-heated melting resin, dispenses seeds after the fire, to make a new stand of pines even as the mother tree dies. Perhaps this is why when I walk I feel so at home in this forest and why the forest does not appeal to me as metaphor or retreat but as fact and essence of faith that life is to be well lived.
