Jamie

* * *

Jamie carried two cocktails along the beach, the sun burning her bare shoulders. She hoped the sunscreen she applied hastily would do its job so she didn't return with an embarrassing sunburn when she returned to the UK.

She passed by the volleyball nets where a few amateurs were playing two on two. Jamie's fingers tingled and her whole body itched with the desire to step onto the court, but she ignored the urge and continued on.

Summer's red swimsuit was easy to spot and Jamie's stomach fluttered when she saw her. The adorable dragon shifter was occupying a sun bed and seemed to be snapping pictures of a tabby cat chasing after a beach ball.

It made Jamie smile. She liked people who could enjoy the small things in life, particularly because she had trouble with that herself.

She arrived, drinks in hand. "Mojitos for the lady.”

Summer paused her cat photography session and pushed her sunglasses up to reveal her lovely eyes underneath. "Thank you. What happened to just one more drink?"

"I changed my mind. It is a holiday, after all. I want to enjoy myself,” she said. Memories from the night before flooded back and Jamie's body tingled in response, craving for more. Unfortunately, that was off the table but that didn't mean she couldn't keep enjoying Summer's company.

She took the free sunbed and sipped from her drink, delighted by the fresh minty taste.

Summer gave her a lopsided smile. "You know, I still don't know what happened on your previous volleyball team."

A familiar dull thud drew her attention and her body instinctively moved when she saw the volleyball flying her way. Her cocktail fell to the sand as she jumped up, her arms pressed together. Her knees bent ever so slightly to absorb the impact as she received the ball and bounced it back up in the air, a perfect pass to nobody.

The volleyball landed in the sand with a plop, creating a small crater. The man who it belonged to caught up with it and picked it up with nothing more than a casual thumbs-up as an acknowledgement.

Jamie wanted to cry but she refused to give in. Instead, she sat down again and stared at the mojito seeping into the sand. It was a waste, a damn waste, and she wasn't talking about the drink.

Summer's voice broke through her thoughts. "Jamie?"

"Sorry, what did you say?"

"I said that was amazing. You moved so fast and sent that ball back perfectly. I remember when we had like a few lessons on volleyball in school and how hard it was."

Jamie's attempt to smile ended more like a grimace. "Thanks. I've practised a lot. It's basically what I've done for the last fifteen years. Receive, serve, block, receive, serve, block. I could probably do it in my sleep. I know it sounds boring but there’s nothing like the rush of stopping an enemy’s ball, seeing their disappointed face, hearing the ball fall on the court."

She was rambling before she knew it.

Instead of interrupting her, Summer let her, only speaking when she was done.
