15 - Ariadne

A persistent noise wakes Ariadne from her nap. She sits up in bed and stares at her door. Picking up her wand, she cautiously approaches the door to open it. Wisp runs inside and barks happily. Ariadne looks down at the animal with confusion. Wisp would never go anywhere without her witch. Ariadne pokes her head out into the hallway to check if Iona was there.

“Ariadne!” a small voice says.

Ariadne looks around but no one is there.

“Down here!” the voice calls.

“Iona?” Ariadne calls back, but she still cannot see her.

“I am on Wisp’s back!” Iona says.

Ariadne turns back to look at the fox and her eyes go wide. There on Wisp’s back, camouflaged by her long red hair, is Iona. She is no more than three inches tall and completely naked.

Ariadne suppresses a giggle but cannot hold back her grin. She closes her bedroom door and walks over to Wisp.

“Did one of your spells go wrong?” Ariadne asks, a giggle escaping.

“Don’t laugh,” Iona protests.

Ariadne leans down and holds out her hand. Iona jumps onto it and Ariadne lifts her up slowly.

“Look at you. You’re adorable!” Ariadne coos, gently poking her finger into Iona’s ribs.

“This is not funny,” Iona yells, her flush evident even in her tiny form.

“What happened, Thumbelina?” Ariadne asks.

“Someone attacked me from behind and made me shrink,” Iona explains.

“Oh!” Ariadne says, her smile fading, “Who was it?”

“I could not see who they were. My dress collapsed on top of me and by the time I found my way out of it, they had run away. I think Wisp’s barks scared them off,” Iona says.

“Familiars can shapeshift when threatened. Wisp must have given your attacker quite a fright,” Ariadne says.

Wisp jumps and Ariadne leans over to scratch behind the good fox’s ears.

“I had hoped whoever set the sirens on you had given up, but it seems they were only waiting for another opportunity,” Ariadne sighs, “I think I may enchant a necklace of yours with a blocking spell, so this will not happen again.”

“I would appreciate that. My blocking enchantments still require work,” Iona says, “It was also quite odd. I did not hear them say the spell out loud so I could not even try to recognize their voice.”

Ariadne frowns at this, “I think we ought to tell one of the professors what happened.”

“No, we cannot,” Iona says.

“Why?” Ariadne says.

Iona hesitates and bites her lip. Ariadne walks over to her desk and tilts her hand so Iona plops onto the wood.

“What of all your talk of trust?” Ariadne asks, “Were those just empty words?”

“No, of course not, but I was told I cannot tell anyone,” Iona says, standing up and putting her arms over her chest.

“By whom?” Ariadne asks.

“The ghost who visited me on Samhain,” Iona says.

Ariadne considers this, now doubly curious.

“I am not inclined to help those who keep secrets from me. I hope you enjoy being that size. Perhaps I can lend you my old doll’s clothes,” Ariadne says, hoping Iona will believe her bluff.
