I grind my teeth for the thirty seconds it takes Zayden to respond.
Depends on what youâre cooking. Yellow is the most flavorful.
âI suggest a yellow onion. Adds more flavor.â I hold one out to Cecilia, and she blinks big doll eyes at me. The same as my museâs, but a soft shade of brown rather than Briarâs vibrant blue. She mustâve gotten her pale irises from her father.
Ceciliaâs soft, round face breaks into a wide smile. âOh, thank you! Iâll have to try that. Iâm making dinner for my daughter tonight.â
I mirror her smile. âI believe I actually know your daughter. Briar Shea, right?â
Her brows rise. âThatâs right. You know Briar?â
I hold out a hand to her. âIâm Saint. Iâm friends with your daughter. She told me youâd be in town, and you two just look so similar.â
âOh my goodness! Iâm so happy to meet one of Briarâs friends. Do you have plans for tonight? Iâm making pot roast!â
âThat sounds delicious, but I couldnât impose.â
Cecilia waves her hand dismissively. âYou canât impose if youâre invited. Iâd love to get to know one of Briarâs friends. The only one she ever talks about is Mack.â
âTheyâre inseparable,â I confirm. Most nights when I find myself outside Briarâs window, Mackâs car is in the driveway. Other than Mackâs blonde hair and an obvious height differenceâMack at five-foot-six and Briar at a generous five feetâthey have few physical differences. The shapes of their faces and shades of their eyes such a close match, youâd almost think they were sisters.
âHow did you and Briar meet?â Cecilia leads the way to the beef.
I take the basket from her arm and she beams at me. âWe met at the Auburn Institute, actually. Technically, Iâm her student.â
âOh really? Sheâs so secretive sometimes. Getting her to tell me about her life is like pulling teeth. How has that professor been behaving?â Her lips purse. âI know she was having some trouble with him at the beginning of the semester.â
My spine stiffens at the mention of Professor Molester, but I keep a smile fixed to my face for her motherâs benefit. âHis behavior toward her seems a little too . . . familiar at times. But I keep an eye out for her.â
Briarâs mother grabs a roast and places it inside the basket before she takes my hand and pats it. âIâm so happy to hear she has such a good friend looking out for her.â
âTo be honest,â I admit as we head for the register, âI have a bit of a crush on her. Maybe you can put in a good word.â
She laughs at my teasing tone, but she brightens. âThatâs wonderful news! Briar needs a good man in her life. Sheâs a tough nut to crack, but once you do, you wonât find anyone with a bigger heart.â
Her mother reminds me so much of my own. Briar is her pride and joy, the same as I was for my mother. I can tell just by her eyes how much she loves her daughter.
