Chapter 32

Horror froze my throat. My chance had gone.

I stared at the room. I wasn’t cuffed to anything. Mikey was out. A few minutes after Lori had left, he‘d left too. I needed to take advantage of this opportunity before he came back.

I dashed back to the window and tried to open it; to my surprise, it responded, opening wide enough for me to slip through. The problem was that I was on the first floor. If I jumped I’d surely break my ankle or worse. What would Jacob do? Think.

I spun and headed for the bed. I ripped off the duvet and clawed off the bedsheet then twisted the thin material into rope. It was hard work with my hands cuffed and took me far longer than I wanted it to.

When it was done, I pushed the bed towards the window then climbed onto it and tied the sheet as tightly as I could around the iron post. I gave it a few hard tugs, checked outside; he wasn’t back. Yet.

Sweating profusely, I picked up my makeshift rope and tossed it out of the window. If I climbed to the bottom of the rope before I let go, I’d be about three feet off the ground. Not too far to fall. If I sustained an injury there was zero chance I’d get away – unless…Mikey’s Ranger was still parked out the front of the cottage. If he hadn’t locked the front door, I could slip inside, find his car key, and drive away. Shit. I slapped my forehead. He kept his keys on the lanyard he wore around his neck. There could have been a spare key of course. The question was: should I waste time looking for it?

Realising I should already be outside, I swung my legs over the windowsill. How long had Mikey been gone now? Ten, fifteen minutes? I didn’t know how long it took to set fire to a car – not very long probably. Then again, he might have decided to drive quite far away to avoid suspicion landing on him.

I started to climb down the side of the house. Dusk had fallen and the air was yellow-grey and nippy. Acid churned in my stomach and my muscles protested. Fit people made things like this look so easy, but it was bloody hard.

It seemed to take me forever to reach the bottom of the sheet. When I did, every limb was trembling, my breaths coming in gasps. I counted to three in my head then dropped to the ground and rolled onto my side. I was fine. Shaky and out of breath but fine. I ran to the Ranger and tried the door; it opened. I scanned the interior, checked behind both sunshields. Nothing. Frustrated but not surprised, I ran back to the cottage and tried the front door; it too opened. I ran inside and checked the table in the hallway – nothing. I hesitated – should I give up looking for the
