CHAPTER TWELVE
MIRIE WAITED UNTIL Violet left the room before pushing herself up. Her entire chest rebelled against the effort, but after a few moments, the sensation subsided.
Shoving away the covers, she maneuvered her legs around until she could dangle her feet over the side of the bed.
The pain was not too bad. Her side felt hot and tight, sore on the inside, but as long as she breathed gingerly, she could move just fine. She was made of far more than a little pain, and very determined not to appear weak.
Not when her world had narrowed to an invisible doctor and Violet of the no answers.
Where was Drei? Was he in trouble?
Were they in trouble?
Mirie was not obligated to accept anyoneâs help, and she would not accept help. Nor would she take anything by mouth. Not drink or food, and certainly not medicine. She would take nothing from people who could not be troubled to answer her questions.
And she had many. About what had happened to Carol and the representatives. Had they been transported from Ninsele? And if so, by whomâchoppers that should have transported them to the royal compound? Those questions led to questions about whether or not they had postponed the talks indefinitely, what they had told the media and whether or not they would be willing to return to Ninsele.
Then came questions about why the general had evacuated everyone from the VIP lounge in the first place. Where had Drei gone? Who had shot her?
âPah.â She waved her hand in growing irritation. As soon as she could safely stand, she would head straight out the door and demand some answers. If she didnât get them, she would continue walking out the next door, and the next, and the one after that. Until she was home. Or someone shot her, whichever came first.
But Mirie had not even placed her feet on the floor before hearing hurried footsteps. âSheâs in here.â
Mirie had hardly grasped that Violet spoke her direction in English before the door opened, and Drei appeared, filling the doorway with his broad shoulders and welcome presence.
Mirie could do no more than stare, every thought and ache forgotten, her eyes so greedy for the sight of him. His expression collapsed; all the stern lines that chiseled his face into stone melted away at the sight of her. His green eyes softened as if the meadow in spring gleamed with morningâs dew, a look of such profound relief. Every tiny worry that had barely compressed inside her, that had simmered for so long threatening to erupt into panic, calmed.
He was here now, alive, and whatever had happened they would face and make right. Drei would protect her. Not only with his life, but his strength. Knowing he was with her gave her strength. Mirie had not realized it until that very moment.
But as she basked in that feeling of right, she shifted her gaze from his face to drink in more of the sight, and suddenly struggled to make sense of his appearance.
