Chapter 26
Jared turned off the shower and grabbed a towel as he stepped out. His mood was foul. He couldnât believe what he was about to ask Samantha to do. He was going to put her in the crosshairs of Christopher Caruthers. He was going to take a chance with her life. He hadnât talked to her about the risk. He hadnât talked to her at all. He didnât know what to say.
He took a breath before opening the bathroom door. He had to face this head on.
Jared opened the door of the bedroom expecting to see Samantha in the kitchen. She wasnât there. He didnât hear any movement, but that wasnât unusual. She made no noise at all. He walked out of the bedroom to the main area. There was no sign of Samantha. He opened the doors to the deck. He hadnât told her not to be out there. He should have told her not to go out. He quickly looked around the deck and the wooded area just beyond. He walked back into the house. His eyes landed on the piece of folded paper. It was propped up against a vase. âJaredâ was written on the paper. He unfolded the paper and began to read.
Jared
First of all, please know that I donât blame you for any of this. I overheard the conversation you and your friends were having today. Natchez is right. This is my mess to fix. As much as I prefer animals to humans, I would not be able to live with myself if someone else was harmed or killed because of me. I am the one Christopher Caruthers wants. I will give him what he wants.
You said earlier that my things had arrived back at Johns. I have very few possessions, most of which can be disposed of. There is one thing that I own that is precious to me. Itâs an old guitar that I purchased from the Goodwill store in Raleigh. I am not a great musician. I only play by ear. But, the guitar helped me with the loneliness. It helped me bring some perspective to this life I was dealt. It helped me survive. If you run across someone thatâs lonely, someone that needs that little boost that old guitar gave me, please pay it forward. Maybe it will help someone else as much as it has me.
Make sure John knows that he has been the single greatest influence in my life. You are so much like him. Scratch Cooperâs head one last time for me. These last few days have been crazy to say the least, but I would never change them. I was given the gift of love, when I met you. I will never get to hear the words, but I felt them. Please donât take tomorrow for granted. It is fitting that today happens to be the day of my birth and will also be the day of my death. Live every day as if it were the last.
