CHAPTER SIX

BRIDGET felt decidedly awkward when she sat down to dinner that evening. She knew better than to talk herself into believing Rashid wanted to be friends. A playboy’s idea of friendship differed from hers. He’d been kind to show her around. How many people did she know who could boast having been kissed by a sheikh? She would treasure his kisses as a precious memory.

But once back in San Francisco, she’d get back in the routine of her normal life and the brief vacation in the Mediterranean would be tucked away.

Watching him throughout dinner, she didn’t see any evidence that he paid special attention to any of his guests. It reaffirmed her belief he’d merely been kind.

No one had even hinted at more.

And she would not let herself fantasize about a long-term relationship. She wanted to be married one day. To have a husband to adore her. To have children to lavish her love upon.

Rashid had been married, and Bridget knew firsthand how second wives fared. It was not for her.

Salina al Besoud summoned her when they adjourned to the drawing room after dinner.

“How was your tour of the city?” she asked Bridget once they were seated at a sofa with a huge silver coffeepot on the table before them.

“It was lovely. I learned quite a bit about your country’s history while Rashid kindly showed me around. Some of the buildings in the old part of the city are quite fabulous. I would have loved to have gone inside to see if the decor matched the elegance of the facades.”

“Another time, perhaps. I’m glad you went with him. He loves our country. No one else seems interested in such pursuits.”

“I love history and exploring new places. I would like to go back and spend more time. Or see a different part of the country,” Bridget said.

“It can be arranged. Ask Rashid.”

Bridget smiled politely and nodded, knowing she would never ask. She’d treasure today’s memory for what it was, a host making sure a guest enjoyed herself.

Laughter rang out from the group near the French doors. Bridget looked over at the same moment Rashid’s gaze moved to her. For a second she felt her heart catch, then begin to beat rapidly. She couldn’t drag her eyes away. His eyes were alight, his smile warm and contagious. What had amused him? She had never heard him laugh before. The richness in the tone brought a smile to her face. Could she ever say anything to make him laugh so?

A moment later he excused himself, glancing around to make sure his guests were occupied. He walked over to Bridget and his grandmother.

“I hope you don’t mind, Grandmother, but I am going to steal your companion away.”

“To where?” she replied, studying him with some interest.

“Bridget has not yet seen the gardens at night. I thought she would enjoy it. Rain is expected soon, so this may be our last chance for a couple of evenings.”

He held out his hand and Bridget automatically placed hers in it.
