Chapter 11

Pull air in. Push it out. Felicity concentrated on breathing and staying upright. Miss Flint had delivered a powerfully hurtful blow, and she likely knew she had. However, Felicity was not of a mind to allow her to know how deeply Simon’s marrying another cut.

“Have we said something amiss?” Mrs. Adams asked.

Felicity looked at her mother and gave a small shake of her head.

“No, no, it is…” Her mother looked at a loss for how to continue.

“We are surprised is all,” Felicity forced herself to say. She could do this. She had concocted fabulous stories before. “We knew Mr. Ramsey when he was in Bath. In fact, we had met him earlier in the summer at a house party.”

“Did you?” Mrs. Adams’s expression was all startled curiosity while her guest looked only mildly surprised and even that was likely feigned.

“Oh, yes,” Mrs. Love agreed.

“And he seemed quite smitten with a young lady in Bath the last time we saw him.” Felicity gave her mother a pointed look, willing her to add to the story. Unfortunately, her mother did not appear to be able to figure out where the story was leading.

“Was Helen in Bath?” Mrs. Adams asked Miss Flint.

“No, it has always been just Mother and me.”

Though her legs were feeling a bit less wobbly, Felicity dared not remain standing for too long. She glanced at Mr. Hedrington. “Do you wish to sit down?”

“If you do,” he said. His eyes held a great deal of concern.

“I do,” she said with a smile, hoping to ease his mind a trifle.

Mrs. Love scooted as far to the end of the bench on which she sat as she could to allow room for both Felicity and Mr. Hedrington to be seated, albeit not comfortably. However, it was better than standing when a lady was still not certain she could keep her senses and not dissolve into tears or fade away in a swoon.

“How long were you in Bath?” Felicity asked Miss Flint while running a hand along her skirt to smooth it. Grace’s description of a blonde beauty standing altogether too close to Simon in the carriage corridor at the Upper Rooms flitted through her mind

“Oh, four months I suppose,” she replied.

“Did you visit the theatre?”

“A couple of times.” Miss Flint eyed her warily.

“Is not the theatre entertaining?” Mrs. Love cried. “I would be content to see a play once a week if it were possible.”

“I think you said the same about the concerts, Mother.”

“I did,” Mrs. Love agreed with a nod. “Did you get to take in a concert? I know it is not always possible to participate in all the pleasures an area might hold when one is tending to an infirm relation.”

“My grandmother enjoys music, so we took her to two concerts while I was there.”

“How lovely. There is nothing like music to lift the spirits. That is, of course, if one cannot go to the theatre.” Mrs. Love laughed lightly, and Mrs. Adams joined her.

“Did you ever attend a ball at the Upper Rooms?” Felicity asked.
