Chapter 9

Casey snuggled closer to the heated body running the length of her back and sighed in contentment. Sin’s body was the best heater ever. Funny how she could tell them apart already. The hard body behind her was longer and smelled slightly different than Evan. Both had a woodsy scent from carpentry, but Sin smelled warmer, as if his body was wrapped in the softest flannel.

She’d slept like the dead. Or better yet, like someone who had finally woken up and lived. She reached across the smooth sheets and found them empty. They were cold, so she knew Evan had left the bed some time ago. Sin grunted in his sleep as she eased away from him to peek at the clock on the nightstand—four in the morning.

Casey swung her legs over the side of the bed and grabbed the nearest shirt tossed carelessly on a dresser. Pulling it on, she padded down the stairs on bare feet, feeling the loss of Sin’s body heat quickly. She headed for the kitchen, looking for a glass of water, when she saw the strip of light under a door. Evan?

She stood outside the door debating whether to knock when it swung open. Evan stood there in nothing but his pajama bottoms and a smile.

“Hey, sweetheart. I thought I heard someone moving around, and I didn’t think it was Hershey.”

Shit, she’d forgotten Hershey in the kitchen. She would have woken the puppy.

“I just came downstairs to get a drink, but I forgot Hershey was sleeping in the kitchen. I’ll just go back upstairs.”

Evan pulled her into his arms and placed a soft kiss on her nose and forehead. “Uh-uh. I’ll go get you something to drink. Hershey’s used to me wandering the house at night. I’m a night owl. Relax in here and I’ll get it. Water, apple juice, milk?”

“Apple juice.”

“I’ll be right back.”

Evan headed toward the kitchen, and Casey got her first good look at the room. Bookshelves lined the walls from the floor to the top of the thirteen-foot ceilings. A dark oak desk with papers and an open laptop was at the far end of the room, with two couches flanking each side of the room. Casey examined the books, running her hands down the gleaming wood shelves she knew her men had crafted by hand. The woodwork in the house was really something. Her men were talented.

The array of books was impressive. Every possible subject was covered from science, to finance, to philosophy, to English and American literature. She was thumbing through a copy of Oliver Twist when Evan returned.

“Here’s your apple juice, honey. Would you like to borrow a book?”

Casey shook her head. “I have a To Be Read pile a mile high. This collection of books is huge. You weren’t kidding when you said you liked to read. You haven’t read all these, have you?”

Casey was really teasing but was shocked when Evan looked a little embarrassed and nodded.

“Yes, I have. I like to read, to learn.
