A few weeks later, Sarah conducted Peter’s performance evaluation. In addition to discussing performance issues in the meeting, Sarah explained in some detail how she saw his responsibilities changing in the next academic year. While his abilities had improved, being an administrator would not be any easier than it had been this year. He would have more teaching duties (two classes of 20 students each), and Sarah would have less time to mentor him because of her involvement in a capital campaign. Moreover, because the current educational team had fallen short of some expectations, more changes in structure and responsibilities were anticipated.

Sarah gave Peter some time to consider their conversation and to decide for himself whether to continue administrative work along with his teaching responsibilities. A few days after the performance evaluation, Peter met briefly with Sarah. He had carefully weighed all she said and wanted to continue as division director. Sarah offered Peter a contract for the following year, and Peter signed it.

By encouraging teachers and administrators to take on more authority and responsibility, Sarah wanted to provide support and challenge to help them manage their work. Sarah faced tensions as she tried to help Peter become more successful, while not abandoning her responsibilities to other teachers.
