Then I had an idea. "We should ask if we can help."

"Why?" Andy asked.

"Because it would be a way of giving something without expecting anything in return," I said. "It would show that we're in the Christmas spirit."

"But what about Santa's fax paper?" Josh asked.

"Let's see if the church needs us," I said. "If they do, we can hurry up and get Santa his fax paper and then come back here and help."

We went down the line of people until we arrived at some long tables with bags of bread and big pots of steaming hot soup. On the other side of the table a bunch of church workers were helping to serve the hungry people.
