HOW TO KNOW

george had no reason for climbing Church Hill, not one that he could understand. He pulled his cloak tight against the wind and followed a well-worn path. A grove of trees grew on one side of the grassy hill. Saint Andrew’s Church stood at the highest point, the courtyard behind it.

As George neared the top of the hill, a branch snapped. George jumped and turned to the grove of trees. A squirrel or other small animal couldn’t snap a branch like that. Was someone in the grove?

The cloudy sky and setting sun made deep shadows in the wooded area. Leaves rustled on the ground. Another branch snapped, then another.

Keeping his eyes on the trees, George stepped back, in the direction of the church. What size animal could possibly make all that noise? The dragon model flashed in his mind, its cat-like eyes, curled tail, claws, and sharp points on its wings. Did dragons really breathe fire? Could one be in the woods? And here George didn’t have a stick or anything to protect himself.

More branches snapped. Then a figure became visible, moving among the shadowy trees. It was too small to be a dragon. He’d soon find out, though, because it was moving closer.

Not wanting to run scared, George held his ground. “Who’s there?” he called, his heart thumping hard in his chest.

The figure stepped from the woods.

“George Pennington? Is that you?” Brother Coll came forward, carrying an armful of branches. He wore a long brown habit and sandals.

George let out a breath. “Yes, it’s me.”

“Is everything okay?” He glanced at the darkening sky.

“Yes, I-I don’t know what I’m doing here.” George peered back down the hill. The rain could start any minute now. Maybe he should just go home.

“Would you like to talk about something?” Brother Coll signaled for George to walk with him, and he headed for the courtyard.

George walked alongside the brother, not sure where to begin. He found himself talking about Knight School and dragons and earning the Helmet of Salvation. While George talked, Brother Coll arranged his armful of branches atop a neat stack of branches in the courtyard. Then they returned to the woods to gather more.

“Sometimes I just don’t know the right thing to do,” George said. “And I want to help my friends, but I don’t know the right thing for them to do either. And I don’t know how to find out.”

“Well, George, . . .” Brother Coll yanked a dead branch from a tree to add to his new armful. “You can always talk to your parents. And Sir Lucian is a very wise knight. He would have good advice. But you know, Jesus is always with you.”

Brother Coll stooped for another branch. “He goes everywhere with you. He knows all your problems, and He knows the answers to all those problems. And”—he pointed to the church—“He is in the church in a special way, just waiting for you. Take your troubles to Him.”

George looked at the church. He’d never thought about that before.
