They ordered Indian food, Wray forgoing the spicier fare for the less-hot dishes Emily enjoyed. With Wray heading out first thing in the morning, the leftovers would stay with Emily.

Over button chicken, naan bread and saffron rice, Wray let Emily know what was going on and what she was going to do.

“Sounds dangerous,” Emily said as she nibbled at a piece of naan she’d dipped into leftover sauce.

Wray smiled. “I’ve raided terrorist strongholds. I can handle a ghost.”

“Ghosts can be plenty dangerous, too.”

Of course Emily would know. She’d lived next door to Sully for years.

“I’ll be all right,” Wray said.

Emily studied her with that unnervingly large stare. “I know you will be,” she said at last. “If anyone can help these people, it’s you. I only want to be sure you’re ready for all it will entail. You told me recently you were reluctant to get back into this sort of thing. What’s changed?”

Wray ran her fork through her rice as she gave this some thought. “Part of it is the action. I love the rush, I’ll admit that. It’s weird how you forget something like that until you’re back in the middle of it. And it’s the sense of having a purpose too. I’d lost that. I mean, working in a pawn shop is fine, but if I left tomorrow, nothing would break down, and the store wouldn’t close. Gus might miss me a little, but he’d just rehire and move on.”

Wray stirred some rice into her sauce and chewed most of it before continuing. “Mostly, I guess it’s knowing I can help. I didn’t do so well in the parent department, and I remember feeling pretty helpless sometimes. When I went into the military, I saw it as a way to gain control for myself but also to give it back to other people who’d lost it. I had a chance to help people, and I did. There’s a high in that, in knowing you have the power to change things for the better.

“With this psychometry thing, while it can be a real bitch, it’s with me for a reason. This curse, the spirit that comes with it, she’s just like these dictators or terrorists the military takes on. She’s a bully who thrives on hurting others. I can stop her. How can I say no to something like that?”

Emily reached across the table and grasped Wray’s hand. “I’ve never been more proud of you than I am right now—and I’ve been plenty proud during the time I’ve had the pleasure of knowing you.”

Wray gave Emily’s fingers a squeeze as she cast her a grin. She’d need to get back to her apartment to search for her passport and the most recent contact info she had for Carter, but for now, she was happy to stay here with Emily a little longer.
