CHAPTER TWELVE
Everything about the Troll Market fascinated Abe. It was a treasure trove of artifacts to confirm or correct information he possessed in the library of books he had more or less inherited from Professor Broom.
He felt Broom’s absence rather keenly. Certainly not as much as Red did, but he and Broom had had decades of stimulating conversations a nd debates, countless games of chess, and had shared many adventures. Broom was one of the first humans to accept him unconditionally, which was a vast improvement from the first decades of his fife.
ì he void Brooms death created was hard for Abe, since neither Hellboy or Liz really shared his fascination with the paranormal history that so interested him. Sure, they shared many mutual interests and the three had grown quite close, especially after Liz moved back to B.P.R.D. headquarters. Still, he missed the intellectual debate.
Krauss appeared to be a stimulating companion and could be the one to fill the void. He appreciated Krauss is intellect and devotion to order. Yes, maybe the Austrian gentleman adhered too closely to the rules but being based in Washington and not being in the field would do that to anyone. Red just needed to give the man time to adjust.
Another void gaped in his heart, Abe realized. It was one he rarely let himself think about but once he saw this woman, it was all he could think about. There were no other amphibians he knew of, no one with whom he could fully share his life. The notions of love were certainly beyond his reach and experience; yet, the moment he spotted her, something clicked. His heart skipped a beat and he found he could not take his eyes off of her.
There was a word for it, something he had learned from Hellboy.
Twitter pared.
That was it. He didn’t know her name but he was most definitely twitterpated.
When his belt buckle started to glow blue, he was genuinely annoyed at being interrupted. He glanced at the buckle, knowing that the others sought him, but he wasn t ready to depart, tie thumbed it off and looked back at the window.
She had vanished.
“Oh,” he said aloud and with great disappointment. He decided to go shopping and headed for the store. As he crossed the distance, he did not hear the low growl coming from a shadowy corner. Abe had totally missed that his observance of the mysterious woman was being watched by Wink,
The door faintly chimed as he entered and the odor of ancient texts was as welcome to him as coming home. He paused to admire the disorderly piles of scrolls, maps, books, and hung parchments. The proprietor, a hunchbacked figure of indeterminate age and species, but clearly comfortable in his surroundings, looked his way and nodded in greeting.
Abe could see himself lingering here for hours, spending every coin in his pockets to purchase these rare treasures for preservation back in the library. One unrolled scroll was spread across a chest-high table, each end held by golden busts of minotaurs.
