CHAPTER 8
âThis shit is getting old,â said Kyle in the darkness. âYo, Mudz, you okay, fam?â
âNo, fam. Man is well fazed.â
Xavi grunted. âYou killed Eric. Weâre not going to let you get away with it.â
âMaybe man should shank the lot of you pussy holes, then. Walk away without witnesses.â
âTry it,â said Paulâs voice, a few feet in front of Clip. âXavi,â he called out, âcome back over this way with the rest of us. Last time the lights went out, we were attacked.â
âBy dogs,â said Jay. âI donât hear no dogs, bro.â
âMudz is the one we should be afraid of,â said Clip.
âReal talk.â
âI hear something,â said Harley.
Clip listened but heard nothing. âWhat is it, Harley? What do you hear?â
âI hear my mum again.â
Help me, Clip-Clip.
Clip yelped and covered her mouth. The whispering was right in her ear. Her brotherâs voice, and the womanâs.
Two live. All die.
Help me, Clip-Clip.
âWhat is it?â Xavi asked her, still further down the carriage.
âNothing. Itâs nothing.â
Footsteps in the aisle.
âEveryone, stay still,â warned Paul. âAnyone who comes near me is getting dropped on their arse.â
Clip reached out in the darkness, afraid that Mudz would suddenly stab her without warning. Now that he had murdered someone, he really had nothing to lose. She called out to Xavi, making sure he was okay.
âIâm okay,â he replied. âJust stay where you are.â
âIâm coming for you, bruv,â said Mudz in a spooky voice, followed by an over-the-top chuckle that sounded like the Chucky doll from the movies.
âHell of a night,â said Grant. âHavenât had this much fun since I toured with Amy Winehouse.â
âYou really are a psychopath,â said Clip.
âI just like to look on the bright side.â
âJesus Christ. There is no bright side.â
âI wouldnât say that.â
Jay suddenly shouted, âHey, back up. Whoever that is, back the hell up away from me.â
âSorry,â said Grant. âMy hands have a mind of their own sometimes.â
Clip sensed movement nearby. Everyoneâs breathing was fitful and fevered, their panic rising. Her panic rising.
The lights came back on.
There were no dogs. No monsters. Just the same old train.
All is well. All is calm.
Clip doubled over, letting out a sigh of relief. Gina reached out and put a hand on her back.
Mudz was standing with Jay near the back of the carriage, while Kyle sat a few feet away from them. Paul and Dan were outside the operatorâs cabin with Clip, Gina, and Harley. Xavi was further down the aisle, staring at the exit doors and muttering. âHeâs gone. Just like his wife.â
Clip had to move down the aisle and join Xavi to get a better look at what he was staring at. Just as he had said, Ericâs body was gone.
Clip placed a hand on Xaviâs lower back. He was shivering. âHopefully heâs gone to wherever Pat went to,â she said.
He looked at her. âYou believe theyâre in Heaven? You?â
âI wouldnât have believed such a place existed when I woke up this morning, but now⦠Maybe the train crashed and weâre all bleeding out, one by one. This could be the place between life and death.
