Chapter Twenty-Two

Yorath, Farrah, and I spent the next few hours poring over the delicate, yellowed pages of the journal. Yorath detailed each trap for us, making our heads spin with the myriad of ways a person could get lost, disoriented, or die in one of his secret passages or hidden aspects. Spending some of my formative years in Bomora, I had heard of some of these devices, but fortunately had never found myself the victim of their design. I found it fascinating to learn about this intriguing but somewhat sick history of my home country. Farrah found it interesting as well, declaring at one point that she would probably never trust a Bomorran building again.

At one point, Yorath said, "I never did ask. What is it you're wanting to do, once you get in the Order's headquarters?"

I told him about Prince Coran's kidnapping. Yorath merely responded, "Ah." His eyes grew misty, and I wondered if he was thinking about poor Princess Jianne.

Evening had already been approaching when we had called upon Yorath. By the time we were done going over his journal—and listening to his stories of how he created the traps, and his tales of the unfortunates who found themselves in them—it was near midnight.

When the stories finally wound down, Yorath graciously offered to let us stay for the night, rather than have us risk trying to find a room at an inn at such late notice (and possibly getting pickpocketed or worse for being on the streets so late at night). Gratefully, Farrah and I accepted his offer.

Yorath pointed up the stairs with his cane, saying, “You’ll have your pick of two rooms up there. They should be fairly fresh—I have a lady who comes every other week to give the place a thorough cleaning. It’s a bit of a luxury for me, but it’s not as easy as it used to be for me to get around.” He shook his cane for emphasis. “Anyway, have a good night, you two, and I’ll see you in the morning.”

“But what about you?” Farrah asked. “Isn’t one of those bedrooms yours?”

Yorath shook his head. “Used to be. Not anymore. These days I just sleep down here instead of trying to get up and down those stairs. I’ve got bedding in the corner, there.” At the foot of one of the bookshelves, I noticed a large wicker basket full of neatly folded linens, with a pillow placed on top to one side.

Over our host’s protests, I picked up the tea tray, now full of empty, dirty dishes, and headed to the kitchen. We had drunk the pot dry and gone back multiple times for more. Farrah hastily followed me, calling up a light spell as she went so we didn’t need to bother lighting the wall lamp.

After we cleaned the dishes, Farrah and I made our way upstairs while Yorath banked the fire and made himself comfortable on the couch. Farrah’s spell light accompanied us, illuminating the hallway just enough for us to see the doorways to our two rooms.
