ELEVEN

Markus sat in the study, trying to focus on the map in front of him. His mind kept going back to the girl. A second Turesi? This would be too good to be true. He scanned the map. There’s no way she would still be in Strandic after that.

“Where would you go?” he wondered. There were a few surrounding towns. He could search them all, but he could not reveal the true reason for his search. He wasn’t going to tell anyone else about this second Turesi, not even his father. Until he could see this girl for himself, he had to be careful.

He held the lock of red hair in his hand. Olyenn was one thing, but Markus had plans for this girl. More than Olyenn could achieve. This would surely bring the Caphears to victory. Yes, if his plans were realized, Daharre would be the strongest kingdom in the land.

“What did you do?!” A loud voice boomed through the room. Markus didn’t even flinch.

He kept his back to the voice and calmly replied, “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“There are reports coming through the ranks that Strandic was attacked by Caphears. I never gave such orders.”

Markus wondered why it had taken so long for that news to travel. He had expected his father’s rage days ago.

Without looking up, he said, “Neither did I.”

King Talark snatched the map off the table. Markus quickly pocketed the hair. He sighed out of annoyance. He had more important things to do than argue with his father.

“Then who gave the orders?” The king was doing what he always did—accuse Markus, so that he knew that he knew. But the king didn’t really want the truth. He wanted to hear Markus deny it, so he would feel absolved. As if hearing the lie made him feel less guilty about what had occurred. So, Markus played along, like he always had.

“I’m not sure. This is the first I’m hearing of it.”

“There are whispers of Olyenn’s origin spreading through the land as well.”

“Well, anyone at the castle who’s seen him can tell he’s not from here, so—”

“I am not messing around anymore, boy! We are at a turning point in our history. We can be remembered as the ones who brought peace to the kingdom. We can use Olyenn to convince the Zaldar leaders to reason with us. If this plan works, Daharre will be most prosperous and the strongest force in the land.” Markus smiled slightly at his father’s choice of words.

“You speak as if those people can be reasoned with. They cannot be reasoned with. Never have, never will,” Markus said.

“They will! We finally have the advantage. We have something that will make them listen.” Talark sighed and threw the map back on the table. “You just don’t get it, do you? Daharre hasn’t advanced in years because of this war. All our time, resources, and money are wrapped up in this. For once, we have an opportunity to end this war and use those resources for progress.
