Chapter Twelve

Jesse was at her first class by seven forty-five Monday morning. Her eight o’clock class was The Renaissance of the Arts. She was looking forward to studying the history and artists of that period. The class was easy that day, with the teacher simply taking roll and handing out a syllabus. He asked if anyone had any questions and, when no one did, dismissed the class at eight fifteen.

So, with her first class under her belt and nothing to do until ten, Jesse wandered down the street to the café. It wasn’t very busy. Apparently, Odette had been right about students sleeping in.

“You are here early.” Odette greeted her, kissing her on her cheek.

“My first class got out early. My next class isn’t for two hours so I thought I’d grab a cup of coffee.”

“Have a seat. I’ll bring it myself.”

Jesse sat facing the counter, so she could watch Odette. She enjoyed the easy way Odette moved, never seemingly overly hurried no matter how chaotic the place was. And this morning, she was moving even easier. Jesse felt an unfamiliar pull in her stomach. There was no denying her attraction to Odette, but there was more and she just couldn’t figure it out.

Odette turned back to her with the coffee and raised an eyebrow at Jesse, who had just been busted for staring.

“You like what you see, mon ami?” Odette teased her.

Jesse blushed and took a coffee cup from Odette. Odette sat across from her with a cup of her own.

“You don’t mind if I join you?”

“Not at all. I’d enjoy that.”

“So why are you not still in your first class again?”

“He let us go early. I guess school will start in earnest tomorrow.”

“And what is your next class?”

“Still life drawing. I hope we get to use our new supplies today.”

“I hope so, too. Which do you prefer, Jesse? Painting or sketching?”

“It depends on my mood. I love both.”

“Must you, um, specialize in one or the other when you are a famous artist?”

“I don’t know. I’ve never really thought about it. If I had to do only one, I suppose I’d paint. But I’ll always sketch, if even just for myself.”

“Good. You must always do what your heart wants.”

Jesse sipped her coffee and pondered that statement. It had been so long since her heart had wanted to do anything but grieve that she didn’t even know if she’d be able to listen to it if it sent her messages again.

“You are a deep person, my Jesse.”

“Why do you say that?”

“You, um, disappear sometimes. Inside your head. I’d love to know what you think at times like that, but I understand those thoughts are yours and yours alone.”

“I’m sorry. I don’t mean to be rude.”

“You are never rude. Thoughtful is not rude. It is quite all right.”

“This coffee is really good,” Jesse said in an attempt to change the subject.

“Thank you. The company is quite nice, too.”

“Yes, it is,” Jesse said. “I’m glad you were able to join me.”

“It’s a rare treat for me to sit down during the day.
