“Oh my God,” Niamh murmured twenty minutes later. “You’re really good at this.”

“Thanks,” Jordan said quietly, gaze intent on the block she was extracting.

“Like, so good at this.”

Niamh was leaning so far forward she was practically sprawled on the table. She couldn’t get enough of watching Jordan do this.

“Am I distracting you?” she asked.

“A little. You’re kind of quivering.”

“Because this is so exciting!” She exhaled and leaned back as Jordan finally slid the block free. “Holy crap. Oh, that was tense.”

“I still have to stack it,” Jordan pointed out.

“Oh, fudge, yeah.”

But Niamh knew Jordan could do it with no trouble. And she did.

Niamh clapped her hands together. Hell yes, Jordan!

“Are you trying to knock it over?” Jordan demanded.

“Nope, nope, sorry. Just very enthusiastic. Watching you reminds me of trying to keep my balance during warrior three.”

“Warrior three?”

“It’s a pose. I used to not be very good at it, but I’m getting better.”

“Can I see?”

“Oh! Um, yeah.” Niamh scooted her chair back, noting Jordan’s wince at the scraping of the chair against the floorboards so close to their precarious tower. “Sorry. She stood a couple feet back from the table, put her hands in prayer position, and extended one leg out behind her, leaning forward as she did.

“Whoa,” Jordan said. “I would fall right the fuck over.”

Niamh’s front leg quivered slightly. “Sometimes I still do,” she admitted with a grin. She moved herself into tree pose, bending her knee and placing the sole of her left foot against her right inner thigh, then raising her arms above her head.

“Think you can take a block out like that?”

“Ooh. Let’s find out.” Niamh adjusted her balance, brought one arm down and reached toward the tower.

“You’ve got this,” Jordan said.

“Maaaybe.” Niamh pinched a center block between her fingers, wiggled it a little, and slowly drew it out.

“You’re so good at this,” Jordan deadpanned. “Like, so good at this.”

Niamh quickly released the block as the laugh bubbled out of her. “Stop! You jerk.” She reached forward to grip the block again and slid it out. She placed it on top of the stack.

“Impressive,” Jordan said.

Niamh breathed a sigh of relief and put both feet on the floor. “Now you try like that.”

“Dear god, no.”

“Pretty please?”

She could see the moment Jordan relented. Jordan was actually amazingly easy to read once you got to know her a little. And, in Niamh’s case, once you began to realize Jordan was reluctant to deny you anything. She grinned to herself.

Jordan stood.

“Put one foot against the opposite leg,” Niamh instructed. “Heel as close to your crotch as you can get it.”

“Notice how few crotch jokes I’m making,” Jordan said as she obeyed.

“Uh-huh. Okay, arms above your head.”

Jordan tried, but immediately wobbled and put her foot back on the ground. Beau wandered into the kitchen, nails clicking on the linoleum, and stared at them.

“You can hold onto my shoulder if you want,” Niamh offered.

“Nope, I’m good,” Jordan said as she tried again. And wobbled again. Her hand came shooting down onto Niamh’s shoulder.
