Chapter 7

“Do you know what you’re saying, Jasper?” Chase asked.

“Of course I do.” Jasper’s frown deepened. “Do you think I don’t know my own father?”

Chase’s surprise paled his face. “Prince Laurent Von Byrne is your father?”

Jasper nodded.

Chase’s voice was a mere whisper when he replied, “I thought he was dead.”

“I wish,” Jasper snorted. “Unfortunately, he is alive and well and continuing his reign of terror. I honestly believe evil men multiply while the good ones die.”

“Wait a minute,” Marc said. “Who is Prince Laurent Von Byrne?”

Marc rolled his eyes when both Jasper and Chase turned to look at him in total shock. It wasn’t like he was up on princely politics. He didn’t know who was who in the paranormal world, beyond Chase and the others he had met through him.

Chase suddenly turned, rubbing his hand over his face. “Okay, I think maybe I need to sit down now.”

Marc was confused as all hell and getting more confused by the minute. “Would someone please explain to me who the hell Prince Laurent Von Byrne is and why his identity is so important?”

Chase’s hand moved to the back of his neck. He rubbed it absently as he turned to stare out the front window. “Prince Laurent Von Byrne was the leader of a vampire coven over five hundred years ago. He believed that vampires should not dilute their bloodlines by mating with those outside their species. He started a war between the vampires and shifters, killing the non-vampiric mates of vampires, sometimes right in front of them.”

Chase sighed deeply and turned to look at Marc. “Legend has it that the prince was killed for his position as the leader of his coven, but if what you’re saying is true and Prince Laurent Von Byrne is alive, then the legend is wrong.”

“He’s been living at the coven for as long as I have been alive.”

“Could you be wrong, Jasper?” Chase asked as he turned around. Real worry had crinkled the lines around Chase’s eyes, making him look older and tired. “Could this man just be an imposter pretending to be Prince Laurent?”

“I suppose anything is possible where my father is concerned. He’s a ruthless bastard used to getting what he wants,” Jasper said. “But the rest of the coven knows who he is. They address him as prince and follow his leadership. I don’t think they would do that if he was an imposter.”

“I need to call my brother-in-law,” Chase said as he suddenly crossed the room to the phone. “If anyone can tell us if Lowell Erickson and Prince Laurent Von Byrne are the same person, it’s Zacarius. He was alive when the Great War started.”

“Do you have somewhere that we can clean up while you make your phone calls, Chase?” Jasper wrinkled his nose when Marc gestured to both of them. “Like I said, we’ve had a long few days. We could both use a shower.”

“Yeah.” Chased waved his hand down the hallway. “You can use the guest room. It’s the second door on the left down the hallway.
