âThe fleet is assembled and awaiting your command,â said Commander Lasur.
Marcus gave a curt nod, as he paced behind his desk. He eyed Harold Lasur, his First Mate, who stood stiffly before his desk. âThe order is given, Commander. Letâs move out.â
Harold saluted briskly, with an arm across his chest, then turned on his heels and left Marcusâ cabin.
Resuming his seat, Marcus reviewed the report. He had four cruisers, nine destroyers and a dozen frigates in his exploratory fleet. Of the two score scouts under his command, he would leave a dozen to keep surveillance in known space for the Valkyrie, but he had a feeling he would be running into Nathan Drex and his crew again somewhere along his journey to the lost planet Earth.
He had not risen to the rank of Grand Admiral without honing his ability to second-guess his opponents, though that had not always worked out the way he planned. The Battle of Reenta was a reminder that he could still be surprised. Yet, he felt in his gut that Nathan knew about Earth and would be trying to find it as well.
More disturbing than Nathan Drex, however, was the ship, the Valkyrie. If she was indeed one of the QF super ships, it might explain how they were able to escape an inertial dampening field. If they could do that, what other capabilities might the ship have?
He walked over to the viewport, gazing out into empty space as his fleet of ships began to move. He had more than enough firepower to deal with the Valkyrie when such an encounter came. The trick was locating them and bringing his fleetâs weapons to bear. He knew if he attempted to capture them again, he would need a different tactic. An inertial dampening field wasnât going to work.
The sound of the warning klaxon filled the ship. He sat down in his chair, fastening the straps. Outside the viewport, the ships vanished, one by one, in a blinding flash of light. Then, he felt the familiar disorientation as the Stormwolf jumped as well.
