Chapter 2 – Don’t Take It Personal

“Girl, you can't keep letting this shit stress you out,” Kendra said, watching as I smoked my fifth blunt in an hour. “I know you and Spade were together since you were 18 and him kicking you out the way he did was grimy, but Diamond, you can't sit here smoking your life away and plotting revenge on him. You're talking about Spade—he’s untouchable.”

“No one is untouchable,” I said, taking a long pull of my blunt and making smoke rings. “Not even Spade. And he’s not the one I’m going after.”

We were sitting in Kendra's living room watching Netflix and eating whatever junk food she had in her cupboard. It was the first place I thought of when I came to and managed to flag down a cab. Kendra, who got herself out of the hood by going to school and earning a nursing degree, patched me up and had been allowing me to crash on her couch ever since. I was beyond grateful for my girl having my back, but there was no way I was taking her advice and allowing Spade to pull this shit on me.

“So then who are you —” Kendra cocked her head to the side and said, “Diamond, please don’t tell me that you plan on doing what I think you plan on doing.”

“Kendra —”

“Imagine if Miko would have came after you on some shit and killed you? We both know she could’ve had your ass if she really wanted to.”

After being unceremoniously kicked from Spade’s home, Miko left with her head held high and found herself put up in a nice building a few blocks down from the hood. She even had a studio where she taught Tae Kwon Do and self-defense to the neighborhood kids for a reduced price, offsetting it by working on television and movie sets as an expert. Miko was a world-renowned master and she could’ve easily broke my neck more times than I could count. But she didn’t and I never figured out why. With the thoughts still churning in my head, I asked Kendra why she thought that was.

“Because she ain't have a death wish. Now please stop plotting and start trying to move on with your life.” Kendra’s phone started ringing and she looked at the screen. “That’s the hospital calling. They probably need me to come in. Lemme start getting ready,” she said, answering the phone and walking down the hall to her room.

I was sitting in the living room alone when Kendra’s boyfriend, Gregory, and his boys walked through the front door. They were polite, waving at me and inclining their heads in an act of reverence, as they made their way to the kitchen where they planned on setting up shop. As straight-laced as Kendra was, she had a weakness for thugs. Greg had came into the hospital after being shot by some rivals and after feeling his large muscles as she patched him up, she slipped him her number and it was history after that.
