CRANIAL OSTEOPATHY

The concepts underlying cranial osteopathy (CO) are quite controversial, with little data yet to support them, but the approach is extremely gentle, and we have witnessed some remarkably positive effects on some children. Osteopaths believe that cerebrospinal fluid normally moves up and down within the spinal column between the sacrum (“tailbone”) and the brain with a subtle pulse called the cranial rhythmic impulse (CRI) that is similar to and as important as the more obvious rhythms of blood flow and breath. This pulse, they say, is reflected in barely perceptible movement of the bones of the head and face, sacrum, and associated body membranes. Minor falls and accidents or trauma incurred during birth may restrict this natural expansion and contraction, causing an imbalance in the body that can lead to a range of pediatric and adult conditions from colic to learning and behavioral problems.

A treatment with CO starts with a gentle, hands-on examination to evaluate the cranial rhythmic impulse and pinpoint any restrictions in the movement of cerebrospinal fluid. Then extremely light pressure is used to release any restrictions in the sacrum, head, or facial bones, restoring movement to the bones and balance to the body as a whole.
